Turning Unsettled

After a clear and cold start to the day, the weather will turn back to a more unsettled pattern.

A push of warmer air from the Midwest is making its way toward our region today.

As this air mass approaches, clouds will increase and thicken this morning. By the afternoon, skies should be mostly to completely cloudy.

An area of snow showers will move through during the mid to late afternoon. Not everyone will see snow. Those that do should only see a light coating of accumulation. Northern areas have a higher chance for some steadier snow than areas further south.

South winds are already becoming established this morning and will strengthen to 10-15 mph by the afternoon. A few hilltops may see gusts to 30 mph.

Temperatures will work their way into the mid 20s this afternoon but will not stop there. As southerly winds continue, temperatures will rise to the upper 20s and low 30s overnight.

A few snow showers will be possible overnight with no accumulation.

Widespread snow will move in just before dawn Wednesday. Some of the snow may be on the heavy side at times. However, it should not last too long, and with temperatures continuing to rise, road conditions will improve as the morning goes on.

Accumulations Wednesday morning will mainly be around an inch or so. However, some eastern areas, especially at higher elevations, could see two or three inches. Same goes for the higher elevations of the western Southern Tier.

It may become warm enough for some rain to mix in near Lake Ontario before the precipitation tapers to showers and flurries for the midday and afternoon hours.

Winds will remain blustery from the south Wednesday morning, then will turn to the southwest for the afternoon. High temperatures will peak in the upper 30s with a few warmer pockets hitting 40 degrees.

Late Week and Weekend Weather

Northwest winds will take over Wednesday evening as a cold front passes through. Snow showers may increase again with the frontal passage during the evening, followed by some isolated but well-organized lake effect overnight into early Thursday.

The lake effect is most likely over Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties in the north, and across Allegany and Steuben counties in the south. Elsewhere, snow will be scattered and short-lived.

Winds will shift a bit toward the west on Thursday, keeping most of the lake effect confined to the northeast and southwest corners of the region.

The wind will be blustery again with a few gusts over 30 mph, particularly in the morning.

Temperatures on Thursday will start around 20 degrees and end up with a high in the mid 20s.

A little lingering lake effect in those same corners of the region may be possible on Friday, but for the most part, it will be quiet with mostly cloudy skies. Saturday will follow suit.

Both days will start with lows in the mid and upper 10s to near 20 degrees. Afternoon highs will then end up around 30 degrees.

A weather system will pass through on Sunday. There is some chance for some coastal influence, which could lead to several inches of snow. Most models, however, are still only showing light accumulations, if any at all.

Temperatures will take a dip behind that system for a chilly day on Monday. However, much of next week should have highs at least near if not above 30 degrees.

Precipitation chances should be lower much of next week, too.
