A strong weather system developing over the Midwest and Great Lakes region will also impact the Finger Lakes, both directly and indirectly, over the closing days of 2025. Here is a quick break down of the hazards our region will face in the coming days.

Sunday afternoon

What: Areas of freezing rain

Where: Mainly across the southern and eastern halves of the region

Impact: Low

As rain moves into the area this afternoon, some areas will still be below freezing, resulting in freezing rain. The occurrence, duration, and amounts of freezing rain will be highly variable and partially elevation dependent. Untreated surfaces will become slippery, especially in higher elevation, rural areas.

Sunday evening

What: Spotty freezing drizzle

Where: Localized pockets of the Southern Tier and eastern Finger Lakes.

Impact: Minimal

Widespread precipitation will end by the early evening, and temperatures will slowly start to rise. Fewer and fewer areas will see freezing drizzle, but some slick spots may remain well into the evening.

Monday afternoon

What: Increasing winds, falling temperatures

Where: Region-wide

Impact: Minimal

After temperatures peak in the mid 40s Monday morning with a few non-hazardous rain showers, a cold front will cause temperatures to fall in the afternoon. A few slick spots will be possible as temperatures drop below freezing. Winds will increase with southwest gusts of 35-45 mph. A few spotty snow showers will also be possible.

Monday evening

What: Flurries, squalls, strong winds

Where: Region-wide, but especially in the northeastern FLX

Impact: Moderate to High

A secondary cold front will bring widespread flurries and squalls Monday evening, followed by areas of lake effect snow across the northeastern Finger Lakes. Meanwhile, northwest winds will increase with gusts as high as 50 mph. The strong winds will create blowing snow and low visibility, and within the stronger lake effect bands, near blizzard conditions will be possible.

Tuesday

What: Flurries, squalls, strong winds

Where: Region-wide, but especially in the northeastern FLX

Impact: Moderate to High

Heavy lake effect snow will continue across portions of the northeastern Finger Lakes, as well as the western Southern Tier. Occasional flurries and squalls will also be possible throughout the rest of the region. Strong winds, gusting to 50 mph, will continue, still from the northwest, causing blowing and drifting snow. Wind chill values will be below zero at times. Wind speeds will start to drop late.

Wednesday

What: Widespread light snow

Where: Region-wide, but with some lake enhancement in the northeastern FLX

Impact: Low

A small system will bring widespread snow on Wednesday with accumulations generally under 2 inches. Some locally higher amounts southeast of Lake Ontario will be possible.
