The main periods of upcoming active weather will be today with rain and pockets of ice, Friday with mixed precipitation, and Sunday-Monday with some light snow showers.
Wednesday
What: Periods of precipitation, mostly falling as rain but with a few pockets of freezing rain.
Impacts: Generally none, but some localized slick surfaces and localized ice jam flooding concerns.
Precipitation is moving into the Finger Lakes Wednesday morning. Temperatures are generally being reported as at or above freezing, but there are likely cold pockets that are sitting just below freezing.
The best chance for pockets of ice will be during the morning hours, but some may linger into the afternoon. Areas near the shore of Lake Ontario and near and east of I-81 have the best chance for seeing some freezing rain.
Widespread precipitation will taper to drizzle and freezing drizzle tonight.
Precipitation amounts today will be on the order of a half inch or slightly more. This may cause some rises on area streams and rivers, which could break up ice and lead to some localized ice jams.
Winds will be light and variable today. Temperatures will mainly be steady or will perhaps rise a degree or two during the daytime, then fall a degree or two tonight.
Thursday
What: Mostly cloudy skies.
Impacts: None, except for some areas of patchy fog.
Precipitation is not expected on Thursday, outside of some lingering morning drizzle. Skies will be rather cloudy and some areas may see some fog. The best chance for some sun to break through will be during the afternoon. Winds will be light and variable. Most places should break into the low and mid 40s for a high.
Friday
What: Mixed precipitation, mainly light
Impacts: Minor
Precipitation is likely on Friday. Rain and snow are the most likely precipitation types, but some icy pockets may be possible. Between rain and snow, I feel rain will be more common. Overall, precipitation amounts look lighter than on Wednesday at around a quarter-inch. There may be some prolonged dry periods as well.
Winds will be a bit blustery from the southeast with a few higher elevations seeing gusts over 30 mph. Temperatures should make it into the 40s for most areas at least for a brief time, though some northern and eastern areas may stick to the 30s.
Saturday
What: Clouds, some sun
Impacts: None
Light winds and dry conditions will return for Saturday. Temperatures will be a bit cooler than the previous two days, with highs in the mid 30s. Clouds are more likely than sun, but exactly how much of each we can expect remains uncertain.
Sunday-Monday
What: Snow showers
Impacts: None-Minor
A disorganized complex of multiple small weather systems will pass through the region Sunday into early Monday. Occasional snow showers are likely with most areas seeing accumulations of around an inch or less. There is a very small chance that these systems are able to coalesce into a more potent system. Even if this happens, it would most likely not directly impact the Finger Lakes. Even simply a moderate snowfall has a less than 5% chance based on the latest model data. Temperatures will be in the 30s, but cooler Monday than Sunday.
Next Week
A pocket of cold air will move through the area on Tuesday, with morning lows well into the 10s and highs in the 20s. Temperatures should rebound well into the 30s on Wednesday, where they will the remain for the rest of the week.
Precipitation looks likely during the second half of next week. Much of this will probably be rain, but some snow may be possible as well. The chances for any notable snow accumulations look low at this time.

That was likely a contributing factor, yes, coupled with an inversion (warm air over top cold air) that helped trap the moisture at the surface. The nearly calm winds played a role as well.
