Widespread frost and freeze conditions are expected tonight as a cool air mass remains in locked in place. Daily highs will mostly be in the 50s to near 60 degrees through the workweek, but warmer air is expected by the weekend. The highest chance for steady rain will be Tuesday night, though stray showers will remain scattered about from time to time all week.
Monday
What: A few scattered showers.
Today will have a mix of sun and clouds and just a small chance for a couple stray showers in the afternoon. The Southern Tier is more likely to see a shower than areas further north, but most areas should end up staying dry. Temperatures will be cool with highs in the low 50s and steady northwest winds over 10 mph at times.
Skies will clear tonight with widespread temperatures in the low and mid 30s. Frost and locally freeze conditions are likely, and protecting sensitive vegetation will be a must. However, there is a chance that this could be the last frost of the season given the coming pattern change.
Tuesday
What: Increasing clouds. Evening rain.
After a cool, sunny, and frosty start, clouds will gradually increase throughout the day. Most areas should stay dry until near or after sunset. Widespread light rain is then expected Tuesday night.
Afternoon highs will mainly be between 55-60 degrees. A few of the broad valleys of the Southern Tier may reach the low 60s. Tuesday night will see temperatures in the mid and upper 40s.
Wednesday
What: Scattered showers.
The weather system that moves in Tuesday night will be hanging around for Wednesday as well with scattered showers on and off throughout the day. This does not mean it will rain all day, and there may be some breaks of sun between showers.
South winds will be a bit blustery with speeds up to 15 mph, which will help highs reach around 60 degrees.
Thursday
What: Scattered showers.
Winds will turn to the northwest on Thursday, knocking highs back to the low 50s. Some scattered showers will be possible, but just how many remains uncertain and some areas may end up dry.
Friday
What:Â Maybe a few showers.
The weather pattern will begin to shift on Friday with highs pushing into the 60s. A few showers may be possible, but most of the time should be dry. Anything that falls looks brief and light at this time.
Saturday-Sunday
What: A couple showers. Warm.
There will probably be a couple showers passing through this weekend, but whether that favors Saturday, Sunday, or perhaps the nighttime hours between the two remains uncertain. Temperatures will continue to rise with highs around or above 70 degrees both days.
Next Week
Overall, temperatures look warmer next week. The middle of the week may be coolest with highs around 60 degrees. This will follow a cold front early in the week that could trigger some thunderstorms. The mid-week cool down will be brief with highs possibly pushing back toward 70 before too long. As alluded to at the top, there are no signs of any frosty nights after tonight through Memorial Day, so I have some cautious optimism that we may be in the clear after tonight.
