Update Type: ADMIN

Friday

What: Scattered afternoon showers, storms

Precipitation on Friday will be limited to a small cluster or broken line of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. This should begin to develop over the northwestern Finger Lakes around 2 or 3 PM, then drop east-southeast through the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Individual cells within the area will develop and dissipate quickly, but the overall area will take its time moving along and will probably not dissipate completely until sunset over the southeastern Finger Lakes.

Severe weather is generally not expected, but a few gusty winds or even some small hail cannot be ruled out. Lightning will likely be limited.

Otherwise, skies will be a mix of sun and clouds. Breezy northwest winds may gust over 30 mph on occasion, helping hold temperatures mostly to the low 70s. Skies will gradually clear this evening with overnight lows in the mid 50s.

Saturday

What: Sun and clouds.

Saturday will have a mix of sun and clouds. While a stray shower cannot be totally ruled out, most areas should remain completely dry throughout the day. Breezy northwest winds will continue, though most areas will not see gusts reach 30 mph. Afternoon highs will again be in the low 70s, followed by clear, calm nighttime conditions and lows in the 50s.

Sunday

What: Sun and clouds. Maybe a shower.

There is a slightly higher chance for a few showers on Sunday, particularly over the Southern Tier and western Finger Lakes. These will be most likely in the late morning and early afternoon, but anywhere could see a shower at most any time. Overall, though, the rain will be isolated, brief, and light, so most outdoor plans for Dads and Grads should be able to proceed as planned without major inconvenience. Winds will remain from the northwest, but will be light. Afternoon highs will reach the mid 70s.

Monday

What: Rain, thunderstorms possible

An area of low pressure is expected to track through the area on Monday. The models continue to place our region on the north side of the low, where a band of prolonged and possibly heavy rainfall is expected. As long as this holds, somewhere in the Finger Lakes will likely see around two inches of rain on Monday, with many areas seeing an inch or more. Should this expectation shift significantly over the weekend, I will have a special update Sunday morning.

Tuesday

What: Scattered showers, mainly early.

Scattered showers will be possible in the wake of Monday’s system, likely focused on the morning hours. Sunshine should increase in the afternoon with highs in the low 70s.

Wednesday

What: A few showers?

Wednesday’s weather is unclear this far in advance. If there is rain, it will likely be limited to some scattered showers. Temperatures look a touch warmer in the mid 70s.

Thursday

What: Thunderstorms?

Our next chance for thunderstorms (as long as Monday’s low stays to our south) may come next Thursday. Details are too uncertain to tell for sure, though.

Further Out

Unsettled weather will persist into next weekend, and then into early July as the same basic pattern remains in place. Temperatures should hints of a bit of warm up toward the 80s as we close out June and head into July, but no significant heat is expected anytime soon.
