After the week we have been through- from the prestorm stress of wondering what will happen, both for forecasters and the general public alike, to coping with the storm itself and then shoveling its aftermath away…I think we could all use a break from the weather.
Thankfully, that is just what we have in store for this weekend. Quiet weather. Average temperatures. A few snow flurries that, if anything, will add to the festive feel more than they will cause any problems.
The storm system that has caused our headaches this week hasn’t moved much. Instead of being located near Boston, where it was on Wednesday, it is now situated just north of Maine.
Low pressure systems feed off of imbalances in the atmosphere, especially related to temperature. Their source of energy is also their downfall however, as the wind that a low creates move the air around and ultimately ‘mix’ up the atmosphere, thus removing the imbalance that formed the storm in the first place.
That is why this storm is next to nothing but an L on the map now. Temperatures across the region are fairly uniform and dry air has been entrained into the storm to such a degree that there is little moisture left for the storm to work with. All its previous moisture is sitting in the snowbank beside your driveway.
So, enjoy the quiet weather. Temperatures will climb back into the 30s this weekend, winds will be light and snow accumulations will be virtually non-existent. I am sure it won’t be too long before there is something else to be watching.
