Another batch of snow ahead of warm Wednesday

Warm Front

An area of low pressure far to the north over Canada will push a warm front through the region today.

Snow ahead of the warm front is moving back into the area this morning. Snow showers will be with us throughout most of the day as the precipitation slowly works from west to east.

Compared to yesterday’s snow, there are a few differences.

The snowfall rates should not be as intense as yesterday. Nor will the wind be as strong. Temperatures will also be warmer and should be above freezing much of the day.

This will all add up to minor accumulations and fair travel conditions for most of the region. Higher elevations east of Cayuga Lake, and in particular around Cortland, will be a bit colder. Accumulations here could get as high as two or even three inches, and road conditions will be more questionable.

High temperatures will generally be in the upper 30s. Those cooler higher elevations, however, will stick to the low and mid 30s.

The cold front associated with this low extends back to the west across Canada and will not move into our region until Wednesday night. This will open us up to a warm southerly flow and some sunshine tomorrow.

After starting in the upper 20s, temperatures will push well into the 40s. Even the cooler higher elevations should get to around 45 degrees, while the Genesee Valley and Rochester area push 50 degrees. It has not been this mild in the Finger Lakes since our Christmas Eve rainstorm.

A few afternoon rain showers will be possible as the cold front finally approaches. These showers will be scattered, light, and brief.

The south winds tomorrow will be on the blustery side with occasional gusts over 30 mph, especially over higher terrain.

Briefly Cooler Ahead of Mild Weekend

As cool air moves back into the region Wednesday night, lingering rain showers will turn to some flurries. A little lake effect for the northeastern Finger Lakes will also be possible.

These snow showers will taper off gradually Thursday morning. Some sunshine should replace the flurries for the afternoon.

Temperatures will be cooler, but not too chilly, with highs in the mid 30s.

Clear skies Thursday night will send temperatures back into the teens, but sunny skies Friday will give temperatures a quick morning boost. The sunshine should persist throughout the day with highs pushing into the upper 30s.

The next weather maker will move in on Saturday. Temperatures initially will be cool enough for some snow, or perhaps a brief icy mix. Warmer air will quickly move in, turning everything to rain showers for the remainder of the day.

Once the mild air moves in, it should stick around for a little. Highs Saturday will reach the mid 40s, but Sunday and Monday will be up near 50 degrees. Temperatures should back down some next week, with highs generally ranging from 35 to 45 degrees.

Another storm system will move through sometime later Tuesday into Wednesday with mostly rain falling and some gusty winds.
