Warming High Pressure
High pressure will spend most of the week over the Southeastern United States, leading to steady warming across our region.
Temperatures are anything but warm this morning. Overnight, the high pressure system passed through the region. Clear skies and calm winds maximized cooling, and widespread teens and single digits resulted.
Warmer air has already started to push into the western parts of the region this morning ahead of a small frontal system. This push of warm air, combined with ample sunshine and light southwest winds on the backside of the high will all lead to rapid warming this morning.
By the afternoon, many areas will be in the low and mid 40s. A few 30s may hang tough in the I-81 Corridor, while the Rochester area will push into the upper 40s.
Skies will be sunny most of the day with the occasional batch of thin clouds passing through. Late in the afternoon, the clouds will be thicker. A few spits of drizzle will be possible this evening, but the incoming front will be dissipating and should not produce much precipitation.
Temperatures will spend most of tonight in the upper 30s and low 40s before dropping to the mid 30s just before sunrise as skies begin to clear.
Tuesday should be another sunny day. Winds will be from the northwest behind the decaying front, but there will be a lack of cold air to move into the region. Highs should range from the mid 40s in the hills of Central New York to possibly the low 50s for the Southern Tier and lower elevations.
While unlikely, there is a small chance that clouds remain locked in place, leading to a cooler Tuesday. This idea lacks support among the major models, though, and is therefore not expected.
Clear skies Tuesday night will allow temperatures to drop into the low 30s and upper 20s. A few pockets of Central New York may drop even further.
Taste of Spring
Warm air will continue to build into our region for the middle of the week as south winds increase.
Wednesday will have wind speeds increasing to near or just above 10 mph by the afternoon. Skies will start sunny, but some thin clouds will work in for the afternoon. These should partially filter the sunshine.
Nonetheless, highs approach and break 60 degrees for many parts of the region. Higher elevations are most likely to peak just shy of 60.
The south wind will remain steady through Wednesday night, holding temperatures well into the 40s. Between the warm air and steady winds, areas that still have a snowpack now will likely lose it.
Thursday will be cloudier than Wednesday as a front approaches from the west. An occasional afternoon shower cannot be ruled out.
Winds will remain from the south, driving temperatures into at least the mid 60s for many areas. Nighttime temperatures will remain in the upper 40s and low 50s with a few more showers.
The cold front should work into the area just before dawn Friday, but may jump back to the north after sunrise. The temperature forecast for Friday is the least certain but still may end up in the 50s.
A quiet and cooler weekend is ahead for next week, but temperatures still look warmer than this past weekend. Currently, mid and upper 30s are expected both Saturday and Sunday.
