High Pressure Exits
While our weather pattern will remain warm for the rest of the workweek, it will also pick up in activity as several weather systems move into the area.
High pressure is still clinging to control of the region today with mostly clear skies to start off this morning. Temperatures range from the upper 20s to the low 40s, depending on topography and location.
Rapid warming will take place this morning under the sunny skies, but thin clouds will gradually increase through the morning and into the afternoon. Sunshine will still penetrate through the clouds, but the available sunshine will be diminished.
Temperatures will end up similar to yesterday or perhaps a degree or two cooler, thanks to the clouds. Low and mid 60s will be widespread again and winds will remain light.
The cloud cover will continue to thicken overnight, keeping nighttime temperatures in the 40s. By dawn, a few rain showers may be entering the region from the south.
Rain will become steadier through Wednesday morning before gradually shifting to the east during the afternoon. Some late sunshine will be possible, mostly across the western parts of the Finger Lakes.
Winds tomorrow will be from the southeast at 10-15 mph. Southeast winds tend to warm the northern and western Finger Lakes more efficiently as the air flows downslope off the higher elevations to the southeast. Combined with the late sunshine, the wind should lead to a variety of temperatures on Wednesday.
Mid or even upper 60s may be possible in the Rochester area. How far east along I-90 the 60s spread is uncertain, but at least upper 50s should be expected from eastern Wayne county toward Syracuse. The western Southern Tier, too, should see at least upper 50s but could be warmer.
From about Ithaca south and eastward, the cap will be closer to the upper 50s, with a floor of mid or even low 50s if the rain lingers long enough. Most places will be somewhere around 60 degrees.
Wilder Weather
Winds will turn to the south Wednesday night and to the southwest on Thursday, allowing even warmer air to flood into the region.
The warm air will be able to tap into sunshine on Thursday, though clouds will also mix in from time to time. Thursday will be the warmest day of the week with widespread low and mid 70s for highs. Temperatures Thursday night will only drop to the mid 50s.
A strong storm system will pass just to our west on Friday. Precipitation will move in late Thursday night and into Friday morning. Rain and thunderstorms will be possible, along with increasing winds.
The winds will peak during the middle of the day along a cold front. Gusts over 50 mph look likely, but even stronger winds may be possible. These strong winds will shift from the south to the southwest as they increase.
Temperatures ahead of the front will partially depend on the precipitation, but should at least push into the 60s, if not the 70s. Temperatures will drop behind the front, reaching the upper 30s by Saturday morning.
Saturday will be much less windy with a mix of sun and clouds. Northwest winds will hold temperatures to near 50 degrees.
Another system will move through on Sunday with widespread rain. Temperatures may manage to reach the mid 50s before another cold front moves through.
Cold air and precipitation wrapping around the backside of this system has snow showers in the forecast for Monday. Chilly air will linger for Tuesday before warmer air moves back in for the middle and end of next week.
