Breezy South Winds

High pressure is situated along the New England coast while a slow moving front is draped through across the Midwest.

Between these two systems, an area of breezy south winds is developing and will move into the Finger Lakes.

The south winds today will blow at 10-15 mph with gusts reaching about 30 mph.

The high will still be in firm control of our weather though, keeping skies mostly sunny throughout the day. The best chance for any clouds whatsoever will be late in the day as some thin clouds approach from the west.

The sunshine and south winds will push temperatures into the upper 70s and low 80s today. The Rochester area should reach the mid 80s.

Skies be will mostly clear tonight with the exception of a few passing thin clouds. Temperatures will vary, ranging from the mid 60s near Rochester to the low 50s in eastern Cortland County.

Thin clouds will be more plentiful on Friday but should not totally block out the sunshine. South winds will persist with similar speeds and gusts.

The temperature will continue to rise with all areas seeing at least 80 degrees. Monroe and Wayne County may push 90 degrees.

Saturday will take a step back as a small disturbance moves through, accompanied by leftovers from thunderstorms in the Midwest Friday. On and off showers will result, especially during the morning hours.

South winds will increase further, with gusts over 30 mph likely. Highs will be mostly in the 75 to 85 degree range, with the warmest air again in the lake plains of Lake Ontario.

Turning Hot

Another stretch of hot and humid weather will begin on Sunday and continue most of next week.

A frontal boundary will stall out well to our west, allowing south and southwest winds to continue to pump hot and humid air northward.

Sunday should have a mix of sun and mostly thin clouds. Southwest winds will blow at around 10 mph with gusts of 25 to 30 mph.

Widespread 90s are expected on Sunday, with the I-90 corridor between Syracuse and Rochester pushing into the mid 90s. Dewpoints will be in the 60s, so the heat index value will reach the upper 90s. Heat Advisories will likely be needed for at least the northern portions of the region.

Monday should be nearly as hot with widespread low and mid 90s. There will be a couple isolated pop-up afternoon thunderstorms. Most areas will probably not see rain.

The chances for a few thunderstorms will creep upwards on Tuesday and Wednesday. The wind may also shift to a more westerly direction, reducing the flow of the hottest air. It will still be plenty warm though, with highs in the upper 80s.

Late next week, the front will draw closer, further increasing the chances for rain and thunderstorms. This should break the heat, with highs retreating to the 70s at least for Friday.
