Unsettled Weather

The Finger Lakes is starting off Friday dry between a pair of low pressure systems.

One low is over southern New England and will depart with no additional impacts in our region. However, a large low pressure system north of the Great Lakes will keep the weather unsettled through the weekend.

Clouds from the first low will move out this morning, opening a window for some sunshine during the mid and late morning hours. The sunshine will quickly mix with puffy cumulus clouds as the surface heats, thanks to chilly air aloft.

These clouds will produce some scattered afternoon showers. A rumble of thunder or a bit of small hail cannot be ruled out, either. The showers will stay scattered enough that not everyone is going to see rain this afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to a high in the low and mid 50s. A few higher elevations may not quite make it over 50 degrees. As the daytime heating wanes late in the day, the showers will dissipate. Still, a few stray showers may linger into the early evening.

Southwest winds will blow throughout the day. Speeds will build to around 10 mph for the late morning and afternoon with a few gusts around 25 mph.

The overnight will be mostly cloudy, though some breaks in the clouds are expected, especially early on. A disturbance will clip the southeastern parts of the region with some rain and maybe snow around dawn Saturday.

Most of the precipitation should stay limited to Tioga, eastern Tompkins, Cortland, and southern Onondaga counties. Some higher elevations and cold pockets could even see an inch or two of slushy snow accumulation. Morning lows will be in the low and mid 30s.

A few scattered showers will be possible outside of this disturbance, again especially in the afternoon hours. Temperatures will rise into the mid and perhaps upper 40s, so rain will be the only precipitation type after the early morning hours.

Quick Turnaround

Sunday will be the coolest day of the weekend and also the most unsettled.

Stiff northwest winds will blow at around 15 mph. Gusts of 30-40 mph will be frequent.

Temperatures will start the day near 30 degrees, but highs will only reach the upper 30s and low 40s. Snow showers will be likely, though some rain should mix in during the peak warming hours. Precipitation will be more common during the morning and should gradually wind down for the afternoon.

Temperatures will fall into the mid and upper 20s by Monday morning, but the cold air will quickly give way to warmer temperatures.

By Monday afternoon, temperatures will have risen about 35 degrees, reaching highs in the upper 50s to low 60s.

South winds blowing at 5-10 mph will team up with some sunshine to facilitate the warming. The air will be dry with relative humidity values of 35-40 percent. That could result in some brushfire risk.

Nighttime temperatures will stay well into the 40s, getting temperatures on Tuesday off to a warm start. Clouds and some scattered showers may prevent the maximum amount of warming, but highs should still easily push into the 60s.

The weather will remain a bit unsettled into Wednesday with some more showers and a few thunderstorms possible. Temperatures should break into the 70s, but there is some uncertainty this far out thanks to a nearby frontal boundary.

Thursday continues to look like the warmest day next week with highs well into the 70s. The possibility of a few places hitting 80 degrees remains. Dry weather is expected, though again, this far out there is some uncertainty.

A cold front should move through on Friday. The timing of the front will determine how warm it gets and what thunderstorm chances the front will bring.

Temperatures on Saturday should still be in the 50s, but Easter Sunday may get stuck in the 40s. Cool weather looks as though it will persist through the following week.
