Thursday-Friday Weather
Low pressure that brought the stormy weather yesterday has stalled out over New England today.
The cold front associated with this system has mainly cleared the region with cooler, drier air building in from the northwest. In fact, light northwest winds will blow persistently through the day.
Clouds will be common today, though some breaks of sunshine, or at least filtered sunshine, are also expected. It has become increasingly clear that rain is not expected during the daytime hours today, outside of perhaps a stray shower late in the afternoon.
Temperatures will be cooler than they have been so far this week, but not chilly by any means. Highs today should mostly be in the mid 70s. Dewpoints will be noticeably lower in the 50s or even 40s.
A small atmospheric wave will move through this evening, touching off a few more scattered showers. These will especially be possible from Seneca Lake eastward after 9 PM. Many areas will see little to no rain.
Skies will gradually clear after midnight, allowing temperatures to slip back into the low 50s with upper 40s in the western Southern Tier.
Friday should have plenty of sunshine throughout the day, with just some scattered fair-weather clouds bubbling up during the daytime heating. Winds will remain from the northwest with speeds a bit higher than today, coming in at around 10 mph.
Daytime highs will be just a smidgen cooler than today, with more low 70s showing up to mix in with the mid 70s.
Friday night will remain clear even as another small disturbance moves through. Winds will turn to the southwest Friday evening, then back to the northwest overnight as the disturbance passes by. Overnight temperatures will end up nearly identical to Thursday night.
Weekend Weather and Next Week
Saturday will be a sunny, dry day, but also the coolest of the upcoming days. Northwest winds will blow at 10-12 mph with gusts just exceeding 25 mph.
Temperatures Saturday will range through the 60s. Higher elevations and the shore of Lake Ontario will only see highs in the low 60s. Most areas will reach the mid 60s, with upper 60s from Elmira to Binghamton.
After a clear and cool night Saturday night, clouds will move in somewhat for Sunday. There should still be some sun, with mostly thin clouds in place.
Widespread mid 40s with colder pockets are expected to start the day on Sunday. High temperatures will be in the upper 60s and low 70s, depending on the extent of the cloud cover.
Monday will be a warmer day with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. Temperatures will get their boost from south winds of 10-15 mph ahead of the next weather maker.
A stray shower or storm during the day cannot be ruled out, but rain chances will increase Monday night and especially Tuesday. If the rain clears out by the mid afternoon, highs Tuesday still have a shot at reaching 70 degrees.
There may be a couple more chances for mainly light rain late next week as an active weather pattern takes hold. Temperatures will continue to be in the 70s on dry, sunny days, but only in the 60s during rainier periods.
This basic weather pattern looks like it will hold into the middle of June with no big surges of heat or extended dry periods in the foreseeable future.
