Low Pressure Passing By
An area of low pressure of Lake Huron this morning will track northeastward today, dragging rain and eventually a weak cold front through the Finger Lakes.
Conditions throughout the region are cloudy but dry early Tuesday morning, but a large area of rain is poised over far western New York, western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. This rain will steadily head to the east, overspreading the Finger Lakes from the mid-morning to the midday hours.
Periods of rain will continue on and off throughout the afternoon. There may be some pockets of dry time, but for the most part, it will be a showery, wet afternoon.
As the rain moves in, winds will peak from the south with speeds up to 15 mph and gusts of 30-35 mph. Temperatures will also reach their highs just before the rain arrives, reaching the low 70s.
This primary area of rain will be out ahead of the cold front, and once it passes late this afternoon, there will be a narrow wedge of minor instability in the atmosphere.
With a fair amount of wind energy still present at the surface and aloft, if any thunderstorms manage to develop, there could be some gusty thunderstorm winds. This is most likely after sunset but before midnight. The majority of the region will not see any thunderstorms, let alone strong to severe ones.
Rain totals through the day and evening hours should average out around a half-inch. There will be areas that see as little as a quarter-inch, and with any localized evening thunderstorms, a few places could see over an inch.
The front will clear the area shortly after midnight, leading to some breaks in the clouds as temperatures back into the low 50s.
Northwest winds will be in place behind the low on Wednesday, but wind speeds will remain light at around 5 mph. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.
The northwest winds will not bring in any cooler air, with highs tomorrow expected to be a couple degrees warmer than today in the mid 70s.
More Rain Chances
Another low pressure system will impact the area Wednesday night and early Thursday. This time, the low will pass to our south as it strengthens along a path from the Ohio Valley to New England.
Some of the precipitation associated with this low will be dependent on thunderstorm development during the day on Wednesday. That could influence how much rain falls across our area, though thunderstorms are generally not expected.
The prime window for widespread rain, possibly with some embedded downpours, will be from about 3 am to 9 am. A few more showers will be possible beyond this timeframe into Thursday afternoon, but they will be scattered and light.
Again, rainfall amounts may end up highly variable and, at this point in time, are highly uncertain.
Some sun may work its way out of the clouds Thursday afternoon before the day is done. Northwest winds will increase to around 10 mph with gusts just under 30 mph. High temperatures will settle around 70 degrees.
After a quiet Friday with highs in the low 70s, there will be another shot at rain on Saturday. While there is still a possibility for widespread rainfall, it is looking more likely that only scattered showers will make it into our region.
Still, the possibility for heavier rain will continue to be monitored. If you have outdoor plans this weekend, and especially on Saturday, be sure to keep checking back for updates.
Temperatures through the weekend will remain in the 70-75 degree window with morning lows in the upper 40s and low 50s.
The best chance for rain next week appears to be in the latter half of the week. Ahead of the weather system responsible for the rain, temperatures may make a run at the 80s on Wednesday before retreating again late in the week.
There are some signs of a return to hotter conditions for the following week, but time will tell if that holds true.
