Weekend Weather
An initial cold front has moved through the region overnight, taking the edge off the heat today.
It will still be warm today, but not as hot and much less humid than yesterday. Temperatures are starting the day out roughly around 70 degrees, and temperatures should top out in the upper 70s this afternoon.
There should be plenty of sunshine today, though fair weather clouds will bubble up later this morning and persist through the afternoon. A couple of these may grow enough to produce a few brief showers. Most areas will not see rain today, and those that do should see less than 15 minutes of precipitation.
Breezy northwest winds will kick up with speeds of 10-15 mph and gusts of 30-35 mph.
Skies will clear early this evening as the daytime heating is lost, but clouds from a secondary front will increase before midnight. Some scattered showers will be possible overnight, with a few stray showers and some drizzle lingering into Saturday morning.
Saturday will start with temperatures in the low 50s and temperatures will be slow to rise thereafter. Clouds will remain thick into the early afternoon, though the spits of drizzle should gradually come to an end.
During the mid to late afternoon, the clouds will break up from west to east, leaving sunshine for the end of the day. High temperatures will struggle into the low and mid 60s, and for areas in and around Cortland County, even reaching 60 degrees may be tough.
Blustery northwest winds will continue on Saturday with wind speeds and gusts similar to today. Even Sunday will still be on the breezy side, though gusts should mostly stay under 30 mph.
As cloudy as much of Saturday will be, Sunday will be equally sunny. Few, if any, clouds are expected throughout the day, but temperatures will not be much warmer. Most areas will see highs in the mid 60s after cool morning lows ranging from the mid 40s to near 50 degrees.
The Weather Next Week
Monday will pick up where Sunday left off with most areas in the mid and upper 40s in the morning. Near lake locations will be the most likely areas to start near or above 50 degrees.
Sunshine will dominate the morning, but then clouds will filter in for the afternoon.
Locally, northwest winds will still be in place, but with speeds under 10 mph and gusts mostly under 20 mph. However, winds upstream across the Great Lakes and southern Canada will turn southerly, cutting off our supply of cool air.
Afternoon highs will nose their way into the low 70s on Monday, while temperatures Monday night will stick to the mid 50s.
Once we get to Monday night, the forecast confidence nosedives.
There are continued signs that a decaying thunderstorm complex may move in from the north during the second half of Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Severe weather is not currently expected with this, but it will be something to keep an eye on.
The path and timing of this will have a large impact on the weather for Tuesday. At this point, plan for the chance for morning rain at least. Temperatures are especially uncertain and will depend on the cloud cover and any rain, but also on the location of the overall pattern thanks to another dome of heat to our west that will be trying to get into our area.
Wednesday, for the most part, looks dry at this point. Temperatures are again a sticking point, though. It will probably be the warmest day of the upcoming week, but it is not clear how much heat will make it into the region. Highs in the 80s are likely, but it could go hotter.
Showers and thunderstorms will be possible later in the week, but it is too early to do much more than guess when they will be, if they occur at all. Questions about the temperature, humidity levels, and preexisting clusters of thunderstorms that could move into the area make anything more than a guess impossible.
The overall pattern for the next week or two looks to have near average temperatures. Precipitation will probably be hit or miss, depending on thunderstorms, which means some areas could end up rather dry.
