High Pressure Dominates
A large area of high pressure will travel from its position over the northern Plains this morning through the Finger Lakes this weekend.
A secondary cold front slid through the region overnight with little fanfare. A few clouds linger across the southeastern corner of the Finger Lakes this morning, near the front. The rest of the area is starting Friday off mostly clear.
Those few morning clouds will quickly move on, leaving sunshine and a few fair weather clouds for the remainder of the day. A steady but not overly strong west wind will set up with speeds of 5-10 mph and gusts just over 20 mph.
These west winds will not bring in much cooler air with highs today again in the low and mid 80s. The air will be dry, though, with much lower humidity levels today compared to yesterday.
Skies will clear and winds will drop tonight, allowing overnight lows to range through the 50s with a few near-lake areas at or just above 60 degrees.
Saturday will be much like today, only winds will be more northwesterly and temperatures a few degrees cooler. Look for highs around 80 degrees, though some higher elevations may end up closer to 75 degrees. Skies will remain full of sunshine and a few fair weather clouds.
Saturday night, the high will pass overhead with clear skies and calm winds. Another night of temperatures in the 50s is likely, with fewer areas managing to stay near 60 degrees.
On the backside of the high Sunday, a light southerly flow will set up. Wind speeds will be under 5 mph, but temperatures will get a boost, anyway. Highs will be above 80 degrees even in higher elevations, with most areas closer to 85 degrees.
Hot Next Week
High pressure will continue to supply sunshine and a southerly flow on Monday. The wind will pick up a bit, strengthened by an approaching weather system from the west. Wind speeds will still just be 5-10 mph, though.
Temperatures will tack on another five degrees over Sunday’s highs, meaning many areas will be around or just above 90 degrees Monday afternoon. Dewpoints will be in the 50s and 60s, so there should not be much of a rise in apparent temperature over the actual temperature.
There will be a chance for a few showers and storms on Tuesday. The setup continues to look marginal and overall unhelpful for drought relief. With the clouds and showers, highs Tuesday should be limited to the low and perhaps mid 80s.
The heat will bounce right back, with highs Wednesday picking up where Monday left off around 90 degrees. It should be a sunny day with a light southwest wind.
Thursday is an uncertain day but will probably have one sort of weather hazard or another. On the one hand, showers and thunderstorms may rumble into the area during the afternoon. There will be some moisture in the atmosphere to work with, so some locally heavy rain would be possible.
However, if the incoming front to trigger this rain does not move through until the nighttime hours, this will both reduce the chances for meaningful rain and increase the daytime temperatures. Excessive heat in the mid and upper 90s remains a possibility, especially across the southern half of the region.
Friday and next weekend are also days of uncertainty with the front possibly lingering around the area. This could bring some more chances for rain next weekend, or if the front mostly stays north, more heat. Stay tuned.
