Weekend Weather

A stalled out frontal boundary will gradually dissipate over our region, keeping humidity high, temperatures warm, and just enough of a chance for rain to be a tease for most.

Based on the current conditions Friday morning, there may actually be two fronts in the region. The first is south of the area but clipping the southeastern Finger Lakes with some clouds. Then, to the west and north, a second front is triggering some showers and storms over Lake Erie and the Adirondacks.

With these poorly defined boundaries, pinpointing the areas most likely to see rain will be tricky and complicated by the hit-or-miss nature of the precipitation.

For the morning hours today, the Finger Lakes should be pretty much dry. Temperatures will rise into the low and mid 80s by the early afternoon. With dewpoints at or above 70 degrees, this will be enough to trigger showers and storms.

There should be fewer storms today than there was yesterday. With weak winds throughout the atmosphere, the storms will be slow moving, if not nearly stationary. This will only enhance the feast-or-famine nature of the rainfall today.

Individual storm cells will cycle in and out of existence. As one cell decays, it will help trigger a new cell nearby. The activity as a whole should diminish by the late afternoon, making the best chances for rain roughly between 1-6 PM.

Since the storm cells will be slow-moving or stationary, the few places that find themselves under a cell could see some heavy rainfall. The individual cells should not be able to last long enough to raise any flooding concerns, even in areas that saw two inches or more of rain yesterday.

Tonight will be quiet. Any lingering showers early in the evening will quickly dissipate. A few patches of fog will be possible in areas that saw rain. It will remain muggy and warm with overnight lows ranging from the mid 60s to the low 70s.

Saturday and Sunday will each follow suit. However, the chances for rain will decrease each day as what is left of the frontal boundary slides southeast. Between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, there will be many places that see little to no rain.

With fewer clouds and showers, temperatures will rise. Highs Saturday should be in the upper 80s with a few low 90s. Sunday will be a degree or two warmer. Dewpoints will remain high, hovering around 70 degrees.

Winds through the weekend will remain light with top gusts around or under 15 mph.

The Weather Next Week

Monday will pick up right where the weekend leaves off. Temperatures will start the day around 70 and will push to the upper 80s and low 90s in the afternoon. Dewpoints will remain around 70 degrees.

There will still be a chance for a few stray showers in the afternoon, but the chance will be minimal. Most areas will probably not see any rain.

The weather pattern will change on Tuesday as a strong cold front moves through the region. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, but it remains to be seen how much rain this system will bring.

Temperatures on Tuesday will depend on the timing of the front and the evolution of the rain but should end up in the 70s later in the day.

The wind will pick up a little on Monday and Tuesday. Southwest winds at 5-10 mph with gusts of 20-25 mph will blow on Monday. On Tuesday, the wind will turn to the northwest with slightly lower wind speeds and gusts.

Cooler, much less humid air will build in behind the front. Lows will return to the 60s on Wednesday morning. With a mix of sun and clouds, highs will still make it into the low 80s. Dewpoints, however, should be comfortable in the 50s.

The weather will more or less repeat itself the rest of the week. Days will be a mix of sun and clouds and highs will reach the low 80s. This should persist Thursday, Friday, and possibly even Saturday. Temperatures, and rain chances, should begin to creep back upwards thereafter.
