Early Week Weather
Cold air remains in place this morning across the Finger Lakes, with temperatures starting the day in the 10s and single digits.
High pressure stretches along the Appalachians while low pressure remains spinning over northeastern Canada. A light southwesterly flow exists between these two systems, and a small disturbance is caught up in that flow over the Midwest.
The high pressure will be the main factor in the weather for much of the week. However, sunshine over the next few days will be limited thanks to the disturbance, which will gradually lose organization and dissipate.
Some parts of the Finger Lakes are starting the day clear while others are cloudy. The morning clouds will burn off, only to be replaced by incoming thin clouds. These clouds will overspread the area this morning and thicken through the afternoon.
Temperatures will remain chilly today with highs ranging from the mid 20s in the northern lake plains to the mid 10s in the higher elevations of the Southern Tier and Central New York. Tonight, most areas will drop into the 10s with a few pockets of both low 20s along the lakes, and some single digits.
A few stray flurries will be possible tonight, especially near and after midnight. Not all areas will see any snow, and those that do will have little to no accumulation.
Tuesday will likewise be rather cloudy, but with little to no precipitation. Some breaks of sunshine will poke in and out of the clouds from time to time. Southwest winds will remain, with speeds up to 10 mph and gusts near or just over 20 mph.
Temperatures will start to nose their way up with highs generally in the mid and upper 20s. Evening temperatures will quickly fall into the low half of the 20s and upper half of the 10s. However, after this initial drop, overnight temperatures should rise a few degrees. By Wednesday morning, temperatures should range through the 20s.
The warming temperatures will be in response to a wind shift to the south. The south winds will persist through Wednesday, which will once again have more clouds than sun. Even with the limited sunshine, temperatures will make a big leap with highs around 40 degrees.
Late Week Weather
Thursday may be the best chance this week for some prolonged and meaningful sunshine. That is not to say there will not be clouds from time to time, though. But it should be sunnier than the rest of the days this week.
South winds will continue to blow with speeds up to 10 mph. Morning temperatures will start between 25-35 degrees and afternoon highs should at least make it into the mid 40s.
Late in the week, high pressure will start to lose its grip on the region. As warmer air continues to push into the region, clouds will increase again and a few scattered showers will start to show up on Friday.
Scattered showers will continue to be possible into Saturday before the potential for some steadier rain later in the day. How much rain falls is uncertain at this point, but the most likely scenario will be for amounts near or under a half-inch.
Both Friday and Saturday have a chance for highs to be around or above 50 degrees. Wind speeds should remain at or below 10 mph.
Rain will become less likely on Sunday, but more chances for rain will come in throughout next week. Temperatures will remain well above average with highs mostly sticking to the 40s if not 50s. By late next week, temperatures may start to return closer to average in the 30s.
