Pattern Persists Through Sunday
High pressure continues to extend across the Carolinas back towards the Ohio Valley while keeping weather systems locked to our north across Canada.
A deep southerly flow of warm air is being pumped northward on the backside of the high pressure system. The next three days in the Finger Lakes will all be very warm, and even Sunday, as the pattern begins to break down, will be well above average.
For today, sunshine will fully dominate the skies. Even thin wisps of cirrus clouds will be hard to find with horizon-to-horizon blue.
Two main differences from yesterday will be a decrease in winds and a slight increase in temperature. Humidity levels will remain low, so brush fires will continue to be a concern.
Winds will be from the southwest at under 10 mph with top gusts around 20 mph. Afternoon highs will be around 80 degrees, with typically warmer areas reaching the low 80s, while higher elevations and the Lake Ontario shoreline stick to the upper 70s.
Some thin clouds will start to work into the area tonight and will persist off and on throughout Friday. Much of Friday will still have nearly full sunshine, though.
Winds on Friday will be light and variable, if not calm at times. Low relative humidity will continue to lead to a brush fire risk, but at least the lack of wind will reduce their ability to spread quickly. High temperatures will again average out around 80 degrees after morning lows in the 50 to 55 degree range.
Saturday will be more of the same, though clouds will increase slightly, especially late. A few stray showers may even pop up near the NY-PA state line. Generally, though, it will still be a sunny, dry day. Morning lows will be in the mid 50s and afternoon highs will, for the third straight day, be around 80 degrees.
A cold front will approach the area on Sunday, but it continues to look as though the steadier rain will hold off until Sunday night, possibly even later than midnight. However, a few stray showers and perhaps a thunderstorm will be possible during the afternoon hours out ahead of the front.
After light winds on Saturday, southeast winds will strengthen on Sunday, reaching around 10 mph by the late afternoon with gusts approaching 30 mph. High temperatures will be a touch cooler with more clouds and the southeast winds, but should still reach the low and mid 70s.
Returning to Average
A period of steady rain is expected Sunday night with the cold front. By Monday morning, this rain should be pushing east, unless the trend in the models of delaying the rain later and later continues.
Regardless, additional scattered showers are expected on Monday, as well as on Tuesday and early Wednesday.
During Monday and Tuesday nights, a few snowflakes may mix in with the rain over higher elevations.
Temperatures will drop to around 50 degrees, with some colder pockets, Monday morning. Cool, blustery southwest winds will ensure highs only reach the mid 50s. Mid 30s are likely Monday night.
Tuesday will likely be the core of the cool air with highs stuck in the mid 40s. Winds will be westerly and still on the blustery side.
By Wednesday, sunshine should start to gradually return and highs will push back to around 50 degrees.
There is a large degree of uncertainty in the temperatures later next week, even as early as Wednesday. The best bet to make for now is to expect highs near average in the 50s. Slightly cooler or slightly warmer temperatures are both possible, though.
The weather looks mainly quiet later next week before an increase in rain chances toward the weekend.
