Wet Weather Pattern
An area of low pressure will pass over the Finger Lakes today, resulting in another rainy day.
One area of rain has already moved into the Finger Lakes during the predawn hours and is lifting north out of the region. Hot on its heels, another area of rain is moving in from Pennsylvania.
Waves of rain will continue to come at the region through the morning hours as the low pressure system approaches.
During the afternoon, the widespread areas of rain will transition to a more showery setup. Off and on showers will be numerous, however, so it may not seem much different, even if the radar looks different.
Embedded within the showers this afternoon will be a few heavier downpours. A couple rumbles of thunder cannot be totally ruled out, either.
Rainfall amounts will be variable due to the isolated nature of those downpours. Many areas should eclipse a half-inch of rain, but isolated pockets could see well over an inch.
Temperatures will be held down by the rain with highs mostly in the low and mid 60s. Winds will generally be gentle, starting from the southeast and ending up from the northwest.
Evening showers are likely, and some light rain will linger overnight. Eventually, some clearing may take place, allowing temperatures to drop to the low and mid 50s.
Thursday will be quieter, with periods of sun mixing with fair-weather clouds. These clouds may become numerous at times, and a few stray, brief showers cannot be ruled out in the afternoon as the clouds continue to grow.
There may be some wildfire smoke high in the atmosphere that blows through late in the day. Near-surface smoke that reduces the air quality is not expected, though.
Temperatures will be warmer with highs in the low and mid 70s. Light northwest winds will blow during the day, becoming nearly calm at night.
Clouds will increase and a few showers will be possible after midnight Thursday night as the next low pressure system approaches.
This will spread numerous showers into the area on Friday with rainfall amounts averaging around a half inch once again. These rain showers will be possible throughout the day and again may contain a few afternoon downpours.
Friday’s temperatures will stick to the mid and upper 60s with very light winds most of the day.
Weather for the Weekend, Next Week
Low pressure will linger off the New England coast this weekend as a small high pressure system tries to build in from the Ohio Valley. This setup will have the Finger Lakes on the edge of influence from each system.
There may be some clouds and a few showers lingering early Saturday as Friday’s low meanders to the east. These will be most likely for areas east of Cayuga Lake. Western areas, meanwhile, may see some sun to start Saturday.
Not much will change for the afternoon, with a few showers remaining across eastern areas and some sun for areas in the west. Even a slight shift in the position of the low, however, could bring either more, or less, showery activity to the region.
Temperatures Saturday will mostly be in the low 70s after starting the day in the low and mid 50s. Winds will be stronger on Saturday, coming in from the northwest at 10-15 mph with gusts of 25-30 mph.
Sunday will be similar to Saturday with a few showers, mainly in the eastern Finger Lakes. Again, the position of the low will be key to how far west the showers spread. Even in the areas at risk for a few showers, the day should not be a washout by any means.
Winds on Sunday will be lighter, but still from the northwest. Temperatures will add a couple more degrees for highs in the mid 70s.
The pattern will remain the same even into Monday, though the chances for rain will probably be even less than Sunday or Saturday. Less rain means more sunshine and warmer temperatures, with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.
As a whole, next week is looking drier and warmer than this week, but there are still uncertainties at play that could bring more rain into the area. Overly hot weather is not expected, though some highs may reach the 80s from time to time.
