High Pressure
A strong area of high pressure will drift across Michigan today, taking firm control of our weather.
Skies are mostly clear across the Finger Lakes this morning as a result of this inbound high pressure. Few, if any, clouds are expected at all today, with bright blue skies dominating from start to finish.
With the high to our west, a north wind will blow at speeds of 5-10 mph. Occasional gusts over 20 mph will be possible.
These winds will ensure temperatures remain on the cool side. Afternoon highs will settle in around 70 degrees, with some higher elevations not escaping the mid 60s. The air will be dry with dewpoints falling into the 40s.
Tonight, the high pressure will continue to come closer to the area. Winds will drop and skies will remain calm, leading to ideal conditions for cooling. Widespread mid 40s are likely overnight across the Southern Tier and into Central New York. Closer to the lakes and across the northern areas, lows will be near or just above 50 degrees.
Winds will remain nearly calm on Friday as the high passes overhead. Skies will again be mostly clear, though there may be a slight haze from a small batch of smoke passing through the atmosphere, far above the surface.
Simply removing the north wind will lead temperatures to rise several degrees. Most areas should see highs Friday in the mid 70s. Dewpoints will remain dry around 50 degrees.
A south wind will pick up Friday night as the high drops southeast toward the Mid-Atlantic coast. Overnight lows will be near average in the mid and low 50s.
Turning Hot
As the high pressure system departs, a weak system will cross southern Canada. This should lead to an increase in clouds for Saturday.
Many of the clouds will be thin clouds high in the atmosphere, which should allow for a good deal of sun to still shine through. The best chance for thicker clouds will come later in the day.
If there is going to be any rain in the next week, late Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening is the time to watch. However, only a highly isolated, brief spit of rain is expected, if even that. Almost all the region should stay dry, and there is a high probability that there will be no rain whatsoever.
South winds will persist on Saturday between the high and this small system, pushing highs into the low 80s. Temperatures Saturday night will stick to the mid 60s.
An overall southerly flow of warm air will continue on Sunday, though winds may turn more northwesterly late in the day due to some localized influence from Lake Ontario.
Sunday will be sunny with a few small fair weather clouds with highs rising to the mid 80s.
Labor Day on Monday will see the return of nearly full sunshine with few if any clouds expected. Winds will be light, but temperatures should continue their march far above the daily averages with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees.
Tuesday and Wednesday should be the warmest days of the week, with widespread temperatures near or just above 90 degrees. Dewpoints will be in the mid and upper 60s, making it a rather muggy heat with head index values a couple of degrees above the actual temperature.
The heat may start to break down on Thursday as a new high pressure moves across Canada and shifts the overall pattern. Still, highs should at least reach the mid 80s with dry, sunny weather likely.
Temperatures will continue to trend back towards normal as we head into next weekend. Rain chances will also eventually come up, though it is too early to tell how this will unfold.
