Mid-Week Weather
A large area of high pressure over the southeastern United States is extending northward into our region today.
There is also a low moving across Canada with a cold front stretching south into the Great Lakes. Between these two systems, southwest winds have taken over in the Finger Lakes.
The result will be lots of sunshine today and warmer temperatures. Most of the occasional clouds today will be sporadic thin clouds that will have little impact on the sunshine.
Afternoon highs will range from the upper 30s in higher elevations, to the mid 40s in the typically warmer lower elevations.
Southwest winds will blow at around 10 mph today with gusts mainly around 25 mph. Stronger winds are likely near Batavia and Rochester, where gusts of 35-45 mph are likely.
Late in the afternoon, the cold front will start to approach from the west. There should be an uptick in cloud cover, though many areas may not see this until after the sun sets. A few flurries will be possible through the evening with no accumulation.
Overnight temperatures will drop to the mid and upper 20s with winds turning to the west.
Wednesday should be cloudier, though breaks of sunshine are still expected. Late in the afternoon or early in the evening, winds will turn to the northwest, and some lake effect off Lake Ontario will enter the picture.
The snow will drop south, mainly impacting Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Cortland counties with an inch or two of accumulation. Stray snow showers and perhaps a brief burst or two may make it as far west and south as Rochester, Geneva, and Ithaca.
Winds on Wednesday will peak during the afternoon with speeds slightly over 10 mph and gusts of 25-30 mph. These winds will knock temperatures back, with highs in the low and mid 30s.
Only 4 Days Remain!
The annual calendar sale to support Finger Lakes Weather is winding down. The last day to order will be on Friday! Orders are shipped within 1 business day, and everything will be in the mail by Saturday at the latest to ensure delivery prior to Christmas.

Love the calendar. Both ’23 and ’24! I urge you to support Drew and buy one, or 2, or3 calendars (great gifts.)Drew’s weather reports are for our fingerlakes and are the first reliable forecasts I’ve seen in my lifetime! Believe me when I say that’s a long, long time!! Thank you Drew, for recognizing the gap in weather reporting for our area and filling that gap so wonderfully. – Margo
This is my second of Drew’s two calendars for ’23 and ’24. I much appreciate the size of the day squares, where I can jot planning notes. The moon phases and historical weather notes are interesting information, monthly photos are beautiful, and I’m sure I’ll want another one when 2025 comes around. – James
Three cheers for the Finger Lakes Weather calendar! I very much appreciate the local photos. More importantly, I’m glad to support FLW, which I rely on for accurate weather reporting and forecasting. – BJB
If you enjoy or rely on my forecasting services, I first want to thank you for trusting me and for your patronage. I am constantly working to make Finger Lakes Weather more useful for you. Last night, I published an in-depth look at my snow map making process. I hope that post is informative and helpful.
Everything I do is funded by donors, local business sponsors, a few local media partners, and the calendar sales. As costs continue to rise, your support is more important than ever. The calendar sale is a great way to do so, as you get a top-quality full sized wall calendar with gorgeous local photos and a plethora of local weather stats, records, and past events.
Please consider purchasing two or three to give out as gifts! Not only do they make a thoughtful, unique, locally made gift… but they also help spread the word about FLX Weather.

Thank you for all you do to help me so that I can help you!

Back to Sunshine
By early Thursday morning, winds will be back out of the southwest. Any lingering lake effect will retreat north of the region before dissipating. It will be a nippy morning, with lows ranging from 20-25 degrees.
Much like today, there will be plenty of sunshine on Thursday with just a few occasional thin clouds. Temperatures will not get quite as warm as today, with highs mainly between 35-40 degrees. Winds will be light with speeds around 5 mph.
Friday will give us a second straight sunny day with few, if any, clouds. Southwesterly flow will persist, leading to morning lows in the upper 20s and low 30s, and afternoon highs in the mid and upper 40s. A few valley locations may even break 50 degrees.
High pressure will pass by to our north this weekend. This will shift the winds to a more northerly direction, though they will be very light. It will be enough to knock temperatures back a bit and increase the cloud cover thanks to moisture from the Great Lakes.
Both Saturday and Sunday should be mostly cloudy, though Saturday will have a better chance for a few breaks of sun here and there. Neither day looks like it will have precipitation, however.
Temperatures both days will start in the low 30s and rise to the mid 40s.
There is a chance for an area of low pressure to develop along the East Coast Sunday night into Monday. This could spread some rain into our area, but it is too early to tell for sure, and it may just stay to the east or not develop at all.
Quiet weather should persist for much of next week with few chances for snow or rain.

Will we have clear enough skies to see the Geminid meteor shower midweek?

Thursday night is looking pretty good for that!
