Quiet weather dominates the forecast

High Pressure

Two areas of high pressure will keep our weather quiet for the foreseeable future with only a few spits of precipitation expected through Christmas.

There is some cloudiness moving through the Finger Lakes early this morning, which even the most recent weather models are not showing. These clouds look as though they will stick around for a while.

Areas that have seen the clouds since the predawn hours are starting the day out well into the 20s. For the southeastern Finger Lakes, where skies are still clear and a couple of inches of snow is on the ground, temperatures are well down into the 10s.

Light southwest winds will bring in some slightly warmer air, though with the clouds, it may not get quite as warm as it had previously been expected. Look for highs mostly in the mid and upper 30s with a few isolated low 40s.

Whether or not skies clear substantially later in the day, clouds will move back in tonight as a subtle cold front drops south-southeast through the region. Only a few stray flurries are expected to accompany these clouds. Temperatures will mainly be in the low and mid 20s tonight.

Thursday will be cool once again with highs mostly between 30-35 degrees, but with some cooler higher elevations.

There may be some morning clouds, with a few flurries possible over the northwestern Finger Lakes. Over time, this should all give way to sunnier skies. With clear skies and only a whisper of a northeast wind, Thursday night should see widespread 10s for overnight lows.

Holiday Weekend

As we head into the Christmas holiday weekend, temperatures will start to climb.

Friday will rebound from the cold start for near-average highs in the mid 30s. Skies will be a mix of some sun and layers of thin clouds.

Clouds will increase on Saturday with a few late spits of rain possible. Most areas will likely stay dry. Morning lows will be in the upper 20s with afternoon highs around 40 degrees.

Sunday morning will start with well above average temperatures in the mid 30s. Afternoon highs will make it into the mid 40s. Clouds will again be plentiful, with a few spits of rain this time in the morning.

There will be no travel concerns on Christmas Day Monday. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds. Morning lows will be in the mid 30s and afternoon highs will push into the upper 40s. A few places may even hit 50 degrees.

Tuesday will have similar temperatures, but with a chance for a few rain showers.

Rain will become more likely towards Wednesday and Thursday next week. Temperatures will eventually begin to slide back to near average levels as we close out the final days of the year.
