Warming Temperatures
Snow is quickly pulling away to the east early Monday morning.
In its place, skies are clearing across parts of the Finger Lakes. This clearing trend will continue through the morning, and the afternoon will turn out mostly sunny.
Wind speeds, however, will only increase further this morning. Still from the northwest, speeds will be around 20 mph with a few gusts eclipsing 50 mph, particularly for areas east of Cayuga Lake.
After peaking this morning, the wind will very gradually slacken during the afternoon, with gusts dropping below 40 mph from west to east.
Most areas will see temperatures rise above 40 degrees this afternoon. Higher elevations that are particularly snow covered this morning will likely stick to the upper 30s.
Skies will be clear tonight with gentler southwest and west winds. The wind will keep temperatures in the low and mid 30s overnight.
Tuesday will continue to be mostly clear, though a few thin clouds will occasionally mix with the sunshine. Winds will be back to the northwest, but they will source from the Ohio Valley as a southerly flow sets up across the Great Lakes.
Temperatures will take a big jump with highs mostly in the mid 50s. Higher elevations of Central New York and the Lake Ontario shore will be in the low 50s. Meanwhile, urban valley locations like Dansville and Elmira may make a run at 60 degrees.
Highs in the 60s will be widespread on Wednesday with even higher elevations likely reaching the 60 degree mark. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds with a few stray, brief showers passing through. This will most likely be the warmest day of the week.
Late Week Uncertainties
A west to east frontal boundary is expected to develop over the region later in the week. The position of the front, as well as the presence of small areas of low pressure riding along the front, will ultimately determine how the late week weather unfolds.
Thursday has a good chance of staying dry with the front just starting to take shape. Sun and clouds are expected with a high around 60 degrees.
Friday is less certain, and there could be at least a few rain showers around at times. There is a chance for steadier rain during part or all of the day.
Temperatures will ultimately be determined by cloud cover and precipitation on Friday, but highs in the 50s look most likely at this time.
If rain holds off until later Friday, it may linger into early Saturday. Overall, though, the chances for rain look less on Saturday than on Friday. Temperatures will likely be a couple degrees cooler on Saturday, but some sun may also be possible.
By Sunday, this frontal complex should be out of the area. A new, quick moving system may spread a few rain showers in with highs mainly in the 40s.
Temperatures will continue to decrease and much of next week may have highs in the 30s. That could open up a window for a little snow, but there are no specific snow threats showing the models at this time.
