Unsettled Weather
Our region started the day with a little sunshine, but rain is due to arrive by the midday and afternoon hours.
An area of rain over Ohio and Ontario will slowly make its way eastward this morning, moving into the Finger Lakes around or shortly after noontime.
This rain is partially associated with the remains of thunderstorms over the Midwest yesterday. Dealing with the remains of thunderstorms is always a tricky business on the weather models. Yesterday, it looked like the rain may have a hard time overcoming dry air in our region.
However, now that the models can take into account what unfolded yesterday, that no longer looks to the case.
The rain will become widespread and will continue for much of the afternoon. Some embedded heavier downpours are also possible, along with a rumble of thunder here and there.
Southeast winds will blow at up to 10 mph today. Temperatures will top out in the upper 50s and low 60s, with a pocket of mid 60s in and around Syracuse.
This band of rain will move out by the evening, leaving the area mostly dry for a few hours. Additional scattered showers will move in after midnight and continue into early Thursday.
The clouds, showers, and continuing southeast winds will hold temperatures mainly in the 50s tonight with some 40s in and round Cortland County.
Rain will taper off Thursday morning, only to redevelop during the midday and afternoon. This new area of rain should be somewhat limited and may be contained to areas near and east of Seneca Lake. However, once this rain develops, it may be slow to move out, continuing for several hours.
By Thursday evening, the region should once again be mostly rain free.
Winds will again be from the southeast at up to 10 mph on Thursday. Temperatures will have a west to east split, with mid 60s to the west of Keuka Lake, but mid 50s to the east of Cayuga Lake.
Weather this Weekend, Next Week
Friday will be mostly cloudy, with a few more rain showers, especially in the afternoon.
These rain showers will be associated with a cold front, but look as though they may be decaying as they arrive.
Temperatures on Friday will mostly be near or slightly above 60 degrees, but higher elevations will likely stick to the upper 50s.
Friday’s winds will be from the south and a bit stronger, with speeds up to 15 mph and the occasional gust over 30 mph.
By Saturday, winds will be from the west and northwest. Speeds will be around 15 mph with a few gusts as high as 40 mph.
Skies will be mostly cloudy, though a little sunshine here or there cannot be ruled out. Neither can a few stray showers, mostly near Lake Ontario.
Temperatures will be cooler with low and mid 50s for most areas, but upper 40s in the hilltops.
Sunday will have plenty of similarities to Saturday. Skies will be mostly cloudy, though skies will start out clear early in the morning. No rain is expected, either. Temperatures will start out in the low and mid 30s, with highs again in the low and mid 50s.
Monday will also start with lows in the low and mid 30s and clear skies. It should remain sunny for most of the day with highs in the upper 50s.
The best chance for rain next week will come later Tuesday into Wednesday but should not amount to too much. Dry weather is favored for the end of the week.
Temperatures next week should continue to be in the 50s to occasionally the low 60s. Warmer weather looks possible the following week as we close out April.
