Showers and Wind
A large low pressure system is located north of the Upper Great Lakes, while a small secondary low rotates around it, traversing from Ohio into Ontario today.
This secondary low will be responsible for breezy winds and some afternoon showers ahead of a cold front today.
Most of the rain associated with this low this morning will pass to our north. A few showers will be possible this morning with a small band of rain during the midday and early afternoon hours.
A second narrow band of rain will be possible later in the afternoon along the actual cold front. Stray showers will continue to be possible before and after this second band.
All in all, for most of the day, it will not be raining, and rain amounts will remain light.
South winds will continue to increase this morning, building to speeds around 15 mph and gusts to 35 mph. There may be a brief period this afternoon between the rain bands when winds are locally stronger.
Temperatures will be in the low and mid 60s for the Genesee Valley and areas along and north of Route 20, which runs east-west just a bit south of the Thruway. To the south, highs will be in the mid and upper 50s for higher elevations, and near or slightly above 60 degrees for lower elevations.
Tonight should be mostly dry outside of a few early spits of rain. It will remain cloudy overnight but may briefly clear out early Saturday morning.
Another bundle of atmospheric energy will rotate through Saturday afternoon with a few scattered showers, and possibly a rumble of thunder or some small hail. These will especially be possible over the northern half of the region. Like today, most of the day will be dry.
Winds will be from the west-northwest with speeds around 15 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph.
Temperatures will range from the upper 40s in higher terrain, with most other areas near or slightly above 50 degrees. The best chance to see 55 degrees will be from Elmira to Binghamton.
Skies will partially clear Saturday night and wind speeds will drop. Nighttime temperatures will drop to the low and mid 30s by Sunday Morning.
The Weather Next Week
Sunday will be a dry day. Any early sun will quickly be replaced by clouds, but some sunshine should gradually return during the afternoon.
Winds will still be steady out of the west-northwest but should be a touch lighter than Saturday. Afternoon highs should be a couple of degrees warmer, with only a few hilltops sticking in the 40s and more areas pushing towards the mid 50s.
Monday morning will also be chilly with almost identical morning lows in the low and mid 30s. Sunshine will be abundant throughout the day.
Monday’s winds will become more northerly in the morning before settling on northwest in the afternoon. Wind speeds will be around 10 mph.
Temperatures will react with upper 40s to near 50-degree highs for most areas. The broad valleys of the Southern Tier, from Dansville to Binghamton, will be in the mid 50s.
Clouds will increase on Tuesday and it remains to be seen if rain will arrive by the late afternoon or evening, or if it will hold off until Wednesday. Showers are highly likely on Wednesday, regardless.
That may be our one main shot for rain next week. Sunny skies will return on Thursday, and the chances for rain will remain low into the weekend. Early next week, however, warm, unsettled weather is more likely.
Until then, temperatures next week will remain mostly in the 50s, though Tuesday may jump into the 60s, as will the weekend.
