Sunny but cool

A large area of high pressure is situated just north of the Finger Lakes over Ontario, Canada.

This high has cleared the clouds out of the region and, with a light northerly flow, sent temperatures tumbling into the 20s this morning.

Now that the sun has risen, temperatures will start a steady climb. However, the light north wind will help keep temperatures down today.

Afternoon highs will average out around 50 degrees, with the warmest readings coming in the valleys of the Southern Tier with highs in the mid 50s. Higher elevations, and areas north of I-90, will only see highs in the mid 40s.

Skies will remain clear throughout the day with even small, stray clouds hard to find.

Tonight, the high will start to shift to the southeast and will pass overhead. Winds will be nearly calm this evening, but will pick back up, gently, from the southeast after midnight.

The southeast wind will keep temperatures a couple of degrees warmer tonight, but the clear skies will again send temperatures below freezing for most areas. Mid and upper 20s will be common across the southern half of the region, while most northern areas, and especially the lakeshores, will stick closer to 30 degrees.

Winds will remain very light on Friday but continuing with the southeasterly direction. Skies will be sunny with just a few stray thin clouds.

Afternoon highs will be about 10 degrees warmer than today, with highs ranging from the mid 60s in the valleys of the Southern Tier, to upper 50s in higher elevations and right along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Most areas should be near or just above 60 degrees.

Skies will gradually turn cloudy from west to east Friday night and south-southeast winds will increase to as high as 10 mph. This will result in a much warmer night, with lows ranging from the mid 40s in the Rochester area and Genesee Valley, to the upper 30s across the Southern Tier and into Cortland County.

Small Summery Taste

A warm front will push into the area on Saturday, accompanied by frequent cloud cover and some afternoon showers.

The showers should arrive as a fairly well-organized band during the mid and late afternoon hours. The rain may last up to 2-3 hours before moving on to the east.

With the clouds and afternoon showers, highs will mainly be in the mid and upper 50s despite a blustery south wind. Wind gusts of 30-35 mph will be common throughout the day.

As warm air pushes in Saturday night, some scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop during the evening and overnight hours. These may bring some localized downpours and frequent lightning, but severe weather is unlikely.

Temperatures Saturday night will only drop to around 50 degrees, which will get Sunday off to a running start. By Sunday afternoon, temperatures should be well into the mid 70s.

Monday will be even warmer, with many areas seeing their first 80 degree day. Morning lows will start in the mid 50s.

Both Sunday and Monday will have a chance for a few stray showers and thunderstorms. Most of the time, both days should be dry, and a fair bit of the region will probably get through both days with little to no rainfall.

A cold front on Tuesday will bring widespread rain and thunderstorms with highs in the mid 70s. Wednesday, too, may remain in the 70s with more showers and perhaps some thunderstorms.

Temperatures should take a dip late next week and into the weekend, but very well may stay at least in the 60s. The chances for additional rain are too uncertain to tell at this point.

Now Drew. Today’s picture was taken by a long term supporter, not Gwen.

    I’m not insulted, no problem.
