Late Week Weather
A cold front dropped south through the region last night and is now stalled out over the Mid-Atlantic states.
This front extends westward into the Ohio Valley, where an area of low pressure is riding slowly eastward along the front.
There are plenty of clouds throughout the Finger Lakes this morning, both ahead of the low and in the wake of last night’s cold front. Clouds will be with us throughout the day, with breaks of sunshine hard to come by and only lasting a brief time.
Winds will be much lighter today than yesterday, but will be coming in from the north, locking cooler air in place.
High temperatures will average out around 60 degrees today, though higher elevations are the Lake Ontario shoreline will stick to the 50s. The warmest areas, where some mid 60s will be possible, will be in and around Syracuse and in the broad valleys of the Southern Tier, especially between Bath and Binghamton.
Rain showers will probably not start to enter the area until around sunset, starting along the NY-PA border and only gradually creeping northward through the evening. By the predawn hours, rain should be falling over most of the region.
The rain will continue throughout Friday, with some areas seeing steady rainfall from sunrise to sunset and beyond. Localized areas could see over an inch of rainfall, especially in the Southern Tier, where the rain will start sooner.
Light north winds will continue through tonight and the first part of Friday before becoming calm. Friday morning lows will be in the mid and upper 40s, while daytime highs will be in the low and mid 50s.
Mother’s Day Weekend Weather
The steady rainfall will taper off Friday evening and come to an end Friday night. Skies will remain mostly cloudy into Saturday.
Scattered showers will redevelop on Saturday, possibly starting as early as the late morning, but increasing during the afternoon. A few downpours, rumbles of thunder, or instances of small hail are not out of the question. Unlike Friday’s rain, Saturday will be on and off, hit-or-miss type showers.
A light south wind will blow, giving temperatures a nudge into the mid and upper 50s. Nighttime temperatures will fall back into the mid 40s.
Showers will continue Saturday night, possibly even becoming steady for a time once again. The showers will persist into Sunday, though there should be a gradual decrease in showers between the morning and the afternoon. A little late day sun will even be possible.
Sunday’s temperatures will be nearly identical to Saturday, with morning lows in the mid 40s and afternoon highs in the mid and upper 50s.
Temperatures will get a boost into the mid 60s for Monday, but there will be more rain to dodge. A new system will drop southeast out of the Upper Great Lakes to bring scattered showers and a few thunderstorms to the area.
The front associated with that system will stall out, keeping showers in the area Monday Night and possibly throughout Tuesday. The position of the front will determine how much rain we see, and whether any thunderstorms are able to develop.
Our next dry day is expected to be on Wednesday, though with this weather pattern, confidence in that is low at this point.
