Rain spoils any chance for northern light sightings Saturday night

Rain and clouds are expected to ruin any chances at catching the Northern Lights tonight. Here is an example of a model radar forecast for 9 PM Saturday, showing widespread rain across the Finger Lakes.

No Northern Lights Tonight

After a spectacular display of the Northern Lights last night was mostly spoiled in the Finger Lakes by clouds until the predawn hours, it is natural to hope for a better chance tonight.

The forecasts for the Northern Lights, while not as strong as last night, would still be favorable for at least a chance at seeing them here in the Finger Lakes.

However, the weather will completely rule that out tonight as low pressure moves into the area.

Scattered showers this afternoon will become more widespread this evening and persist throughout the overnight. Substantial breaks in the rain will be hard enough to come by, let alone breaks in the clouds significant enough for any decent views of the night sky.

The nearest clear skies will likely be over central Ohio, but being further south with a weaker aurora, that would be no guarantee, either.

The northern lights are caused by energy that erupts from the sun. The particular region of the sun responsible for this activity is 16 times larger than planet Earth. Earth will continue to be aligned with this region of activity, which continues to erupt large flares.

This means that there may be other chances in the coming days for additional displays of the northern lights. Unfortunately, Sunday night is the only upcoming night with a decent chance for partly cloudy to mostly clear skies.

With tomorrow being Mother’s Day, the chances that I will have an additional update are small, but if solar storm conditions look favorable toward the evening, I may be able to post another update.

If you were lucky enough to capture the northern lights last night or early this morning, I’d love to see them! You can easily upload photos at https://flxweather.com/photos/
