Early Week Weather
Monday is off to a cloudy and at times misty start in the wake of yesterday’s low pressure system.
Weak high pressure is now overhead and is likely trapping some of this moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere. As such, it may take a while this morning to burn off the areas of fog, drizzle, and low clouds.
Eventually, though, fair weather clouds with gaps of sunshine should take over and persist through the remainder of the day. A stray afternoon shower cannot be totally ruled out, but these will likely be limited to spits of rain that last only a couple minutes and do not even completely wet the pavement.
The vast majority of the region will see no rain.
Winds will be nearly calm, or at most light and variable, throughout the day.
Afternoon highs will range through the mid and upper 70s with a few urban locations around 80 degrees.
Skies may clear for a time this evening before new clouds build in. Winds will remain calm with overnight lows in the mid and upper 50s.
Tuesday will not be too dissimilar to today. Some sunshine will mix with a fair bit of clouds, and a stray afternoon shower cannot be ruled out. The chances for rain tomorrow are about as meager as today.
A light south wind will set up with speeds no higher than 5 mph. However, it will be enough to bring in warmer air. High temperatures tomorrow will mainly be in the mid 80s. Higher elevations will be a bit cooler, but locations such as Syracuse, Dansville, and Elmira have a shot at the upper 80s.
Tuesday night will be warm and a bit muggy. Overnight lows will be in the low and mid 60s as south winds increase. Skies will be partly cloudy to mostly clear with some areas of fog possible.
By Wednesday, an increase in moisture and some subtle energy in the atmosphere will trigger more in the way of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon.
The activity should remain scattered, but with very light winds throughout the different layers of the atmosphere, storms may be slow moving. This will result in a feast-or-famine type distribution of rainfall.
Temperatures will reach the low and mid 80s before storms start to pop and put a halt to the warming.
Unsettled and Cooler
A cold front will move through the region sometime on Thursday, probably early on. A period of rain is likely with the front, followed by additional showers behind the front.
The morning will start warm and muggy again, with lows in the mid 60s.
Winds will then turn to the southwest and may be a bit blustery at times. Slightly cooler air will start to move in, enhanced by the clouds and showers. Highs Thursday will mainly be in the upper 70s.
Thursday night will see a decrease in showers with lows in the upper 50s. Showers will pick up again as the daytime heating cycle kicks in on Friday. The showers may become numerous during the afternoon with a few rumbles of thunder possible.
Winds will be light on Friday with a northwesterly direction. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the low 70s.
Scattered showers will continue on Saturday and possibly Sunday. Each day should have slightly fewer showers than the previous day.
Temperatures will remain reduced with highs near or slightly above 70 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will stick to the 50s.
The overall pattern next week currently looks to favor a continuation of unsettled, cooler conditions.
