Cooler weather settles in, stays through the weekend

finger lakes weather forecast thursday october 24 2024 cloudy skies with a background and midground filled with colorful fall trees and a field of grass in the foreground.
Daytime highs will be in the 50s through the weekend before another warm up next week.

Cold Fronts

A cold front moved through the Finger Lakes last evening and has ushered in a return to cooler temperatures.

Most areas are starting off in the mid 40s this morning, though some western areas that have seen some clearing in the skies are cooler.

Skies will generally remain cloudy for much of today, partly due to the cool air flowing over Lake Ontario. Western areas, therefore, may keep some of the early sunshine with less influence from the lake.

A few spits of rain cannot be ruled out, especially near Lake Ontario this morning. Most areas will not see any rain.

Clouds may start to break up in the late afternoon, ending the day with some sun. Skies will continue to clear during the evening hours and should be mostly clear much of the night.

Northwest winds will blow at 5-10 mph, helping keep temperatures in check. Afternoon highs will only reach the low and mid 50s.

As skies clear tonight, temperatures will drop. Frosty overnight lows in the low and mid 30s are likely.

Friday will be the reverse of today, with early sunshine gradually giving way to some late day clouds. A few showers will also be possible, but again, most areas will remain dry.

Winds will turn to the southwest, giving temperatures a slight boost into the upper 50s. Friday night will stick to the mid 40s with clouds and a few scattered showers as a second cold front moves through.

Clouds and a few showers will stick around for Saturday with highs in the mid 50s. Clearing skies Saturday night will send temperatures back into the low and mid 30s.

Sunday will follow with a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the low 50s.

Warming Up Next Week

Sunday night will likely be the coldest night so far this season. Lows will range from just above 30 degrees along the lake shores to as low as the mid 20s in some of the typically colder outlying areas.

Despite the cold start, Monday afternoon will see temperatures into the mid 50s. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.

Tuesday will add about 10 degrees to both the morning lows and afternoon highs, coming in near 40 and in the mid 60s, respectively. Skies should be sunny with a few clouds.

Temperatures will continue to rise through the middle of the week as well. By Wednesday, temperatures may be pushing 70 degrees, though there is some uncertainty with the cloud cover which could impact how warm it gets.

Thursday, which is Halloween, will likely be the peak of the warmth with highs potentially well into the 70s.

While early, the forecast for trick-or-treating looks fantastic, with warm, dry conditions currently expected.

As the calendar flips to November, the weather will start to get cooler and more unsettled. A wet, colder pattern looks likely by next weekend.
