Wintry Weather for Some
Rain and snow continue across the Finger Lakes this morning as low pressure, which developed yesterday near the coast of New Jersey, continues to move inland over southeastern New York.
As expected, there has been extreme variation in snow amounts, with all rain to the north, little to nothing sticking in the valley, and 4-8 inches in the higher elevations. This is all exactly what was expected.
Roadways this morning are also mixed but should improve as the sun rises and temperatures creep up. With pre-dawn temperatures near or just below freezing in the snowy areas, it will not take much to rise above freezing.
Combined with road crews treating the roads, and travel should be easy going by mid-morning on all but the most rural, high elevation roads.
Rain and snow will continue through the morning, though snow accumulations should significantly slow down. Some areas may see another inch or two, but for most areas under 1600 feet, additional accumulations this morning will be minimal.
Dry air will wrap around the low and into the area late this morning and this afternoon, cutting off most of the precipitation. This will take place from east-northeast to west-southwest. Areas close to the Pennsylvania state line may hold on to steady precipitation well into the afternoon, but the intensity should decrease at least.
Temperatures will again be variable today. Areas without any snow should easily make it to the low or even mid 40s. Areas with a solid snowpack, however, will probably stay in the mid or upper 30s.
Spits of rain and snow will continue this afternoon and through the night. There should also be some clearing tonight, though, and the precipitation may mostly end for a time.
Overnight temperatures will drop to the low and mid 30s with a few upper 20s in and around Cortland County.

Weekend Weather, Thanksgiving Week Weather
Low pressure will hang around the area into Saturday but will be pulling away from our region. Still, stray showers and a few morning flurries are likely on Saturday.
The precipitation tomorrow will be nothing like today, with short-lived, sporadic, light showers only. Much of the time, it will probably be dry.
Winds will pick up, coming in from the northwest at 10-15 mph with a few gusts over 30 mph. Afternoon highs should be in the low and mid 40s.
A few more scattered showers will be possible Saturday night into early Sunday, but the afternoon should be dry. There may even be some sunshine at times.
Winds Sunday will be similar to Saturday, and temperatures will be in the same neighborhood as well.
Our next weather maker will approach the area on Monday, bringing showers Monday night and throughout Tuesday.
Temperatures will get a small boost with this system, with highs in the upper 40s Monday and around 50 degrees on Tuesday.
It will be a brief bump, though, with highs retreating to near 40 on Wednesday and the upper 30s for Thanksgiving Day on Thursday. Both days will have some rain and snow showers as one system departs and the next rolls in.
Unsettled weather with at least some areas of snow is likely into Black Friday and the weekend, but it is too early to pinpoint any details.
Colder weather looks like it is here to stay with highs mainly in the 30s for at least early December.
