Warm Front

A push of warmer air is moving toward the Finger Lakes, and while it will not really arrive until tomorrow, it will result in some widespread light snow today.

Temperatures are starting the day in the 10s with some breaks in the clouds across the region. Clouds associated with the push of warmer air are moving in quickly, though, so the chances for sunshine will be limited.

Snow will gradually push east this morning and should overspread most of the region by the midday hours. Light snow will continue through the afternoon, though it may start to break up a bit late in the afternoon.

The snow will continue to become more scattered this evening and sporadic overnight into early Friday.

Most areas will only see around an inch of total accumulation. A few higher elevations may manage two inches.

South winds will blow at 5-10 mph through the day. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the mid 20s.

Temperatures will change little tonight with most areas holding in the mid 20s. Temperatures will start to rise after sunrise Friday with highs in the mid 30s.

Outside of a few morning flurries, Friday will be quiet. There may even be a little late afternoon sun. Winds will be light from the west during the morning but will turn to the southwest in the afternoon.

The wind will shift to the south Friday evening with an increase in wind speed. Winds will be 10-15 mph with the highest speeds over the higher elevations outside of the Southern Tier. A few gusts as high as 35 mph will be possible in these hills.

Temperatures will initially dip Friday evening but will rise by Saturday morning. Northwestern areas will start the day in the mid 30s with upper 20s in the southeast. Most will be somewhere in between.

Turning Sharply Colder

Another round of widespread light snow is expected throughout the day on Saturday. A few areas may see a little rain mix in during the afternoon with highs in the mid and upper 30s.

Like today, accumulations should be minor.

Late Saturday, a cold front will come through turning winds to the northwest. By Sunday morning, the front will be along the Atlantic Coast with a new low developing over the Mid-Atlantic.

This low will scoot out to sea with no precipitation reaching our area, but it will turn our winds to the north, pulling down even more cold air.

Sunday will start in the mid 10s with a high in the low 20s. That will seem mild compared to the next few days.

Monday will start in the single digits with highs barely getting above 10 degrees. On Tuesday, highs are expected to remain in the single digits. Both morning and nighttime temperatures will fall below zero for many, and depending on cloud cover, some areas could approach double-digits below zero Tuesday night.

As far as precipitation goes, there may be a few snow showers around on Sunday and Monday, but with little substantial accumulation.

Lake effect looks limited Tuesday and Wednesday and mainly outside of the area with weak west winds. There is a decent chance for sunshine both days.

Temperatures will not take too long to rebound, with highs back into the mid and upper 20s by Friday. It should remain a quiet week with little precipitation.
