Briefly Warmer
A warm front is moving through the Finger Lakes early Friday morning with some scattered snow showers.
As the front clears the region, the snow will taper to a few lingering, isolated flurries. These will move out of the area as winds turn to the southwest by this afternoon.
Clouds will remain plentiful for much of the day, though there may be some patches of clearing late this afternoon and early this evening.
Warmed by the southerly flow, afternoon highs today will be in the low and mid 30s.
Winds will be light during the day but will increase in speed this evening and overnight. Higher elevations, in particular, may gust over 30 mph.
After an initial dip this evening, temperatures will rise overnight. By Saturday morning, temperatures will range from the mid 30s in the northwest to the upper 20s in the southeast. Most areas should be near or above 30 degrees at sunrise.
Low pressure will pass to our north on Saturday, bringing another area of widespread light snow to the region. A little rain may even mix in for the warmer areas as highs push into the mid and upper 30s on Saturday.
Winds will remain blustery from the south until a cold front moves through late in the afternoon and early in the evening. Winds will then turn to the northwest and temperatures will start to drop rapidly.
By Sunday morning, temperatures will be back into the 10s. A couple snow showers cannot be ruled out early Sunday.
Bitter Cold
The cold front that moves through our area Saturday evening will serve as a focal point for low pressure on Sunday along the Mid-Atlantic coast. This low will quickly move off to the northeast.
Snow from this coastal system may just clip the eastern Finger Lakes Sunday evening with minimal accumulations. Any further movement to the west with this system could introduce a couple inches to the far southeastern Finger Lakes, but this remains unlikely.
More importantly, this system will turn our winds even more northerly, opening our region to some arctic cold.
Temperatures will not move much on Sunday, just barely scraping to around 20 degrees. Low Sunday night will easily be down into the single digits.
A few snow showers will be around on Monday, but with light west winds taking hold, the lake effect for our area will be minimal.
High temperatures on Monday will struggle to reach the mid 10s, but the cold air will continue to build in.
Tuesday will start out with many areas near or slightly below zero and afternoon highs may have a hard time even getting to 10 degrees.
Lake effect will be out of the picture with a mix of sun and clouds instead.
How cold Tuesday night gets will likely depend on the extent of the cloud cover. Almost all areas should fall below zero, and many areas could end up near or below -10 degrees.
While we did not see anything nearly this cold in the 2023-2024 winter last year, both of the previous winters had equally cold or colder temperatures.
Temperatures will add a couple degrees to the daily highs on Wednesday but will still only just get above 10 degrees. Expect some sun mixing with clouds, followed by an increase in clouds late.
Thursday will jump up to the mid 20s as some widespread snow moves through, due in part to the influx of milder air. By next weekend, highs may be back around 30 degrees with nighttime temperatures near 20.
