Turning Warmer

After a chilly reminder that it is only the very start of March this weekend, milder weather will make inroads into the Finger Lakes again this week.

High pressure centered over the Mid-Atlantic region is in control of our weather today.

There are a few last lake effect flurries over isolated portions of the northern and eastern Finger Lakes this morning. These will not last long as winds start to shift from the northwest to the southwest before noon.

While there are already some sunny areas this morning, the amount of sunshine as a whole should increase today. Skies may not completely clear out until early this evening, though.

Temperatures will reach a high in the low and mid 30s for most areas. Some upper 20s are likely in the higher elevations east of Owasco Lake.

With the clear skies and light winds tonight, temperatures will drop to the mid 20s fairly quickly after sunset. However, winds will turn to the south and increase up to 10 mph, causing temperatures to rise during the overnight.

By Tuesday morning, temperatures will be in the upper 20s and low 30s with a few more western areas pushing toward 35 degrees.

The south wind will remain in place with speeds around 10 mph throughout Tuesday. Skies will be cloudy and a few spits of precipitation here or there may be possible. For the most part, it will be dry, though.

Temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 40s with a few areas in the western Finger Lakes and Southern Tier hitting or exceeding 50 degrees.

Wind speeds, still from the south, will increase Tuesday night and especially into Wednesday. Top gusts Wednesday will be 40-50 mph with a few higher elevations exceeding 50 mph.

Warm air will continue to push in with highs Wednesday into the mid 50s. It will be a showery day, though, with on and off bouts of rain. The warm temperatures, rainfall, and wind may lead to the possibility for some ice jam flooding on rivers that still have significant ice coverage.

Average Temperatures

Wednesday night will remain mild and windy, with temperatures dropping to the low 40s by Thursday morning.

An early morning cold front will move through with additional rain showers. Temperatures will spend the rest of Thursday falling, with mid 30s and some snow showers by the afternoon.

Winds will turn to the southwest, then west during the day Thursday. A further turn to the northwest is expected Thursday night with another increase in wind speed.

Another round of 40-50 mph gusts will be possible, starting in the west during the afternoon and spreading east during the evening.

Temperatures will reach the mid 20s by Friday morning with a few lake effect snow showers. These shouldn’t last long or be heavy.

Friday will still end up reaching the mid and upper 30s for a high, which is right on the seasonal averages for early March.

Saturday will start out in the mid 20s with a high in the mid 30s. A few snow showers will be possible as a weak system moves through, but this remains uncertain at this time.

Sunday will not be a whole lot different, though the morning may start a couple degrees cooler. A few more snow showers will be possible with highs in the mid 30s.

A strong weather system is possible next week, leading to a large spread in possibilities on the models. However, there are strong signals that this will not only be a wet system, but potentially a very warm one as well.

As we head further into March and eventually April, these types of temperature spikes will become more possible as we start to transition from the cold season to the warm one. This is a common, natural part of our seasonal cycle.

Temperatures should return closer to average again behind that system, and a couple warm days certainly doesn’t mean we are necessarily done with snow.
