Mid-Week Weather

A stalled out frontal boundary remains draped over the region, which will keep the weather a bit unsettled for the next few days.

An area of widespread rain moved through the Finger Lakes along this front during the predawn hours, leaving clouds, some fog, and a few showers in its wake.

The clouds will linger along the front throughout the day today, with a gradual increase in scattered showers this afternoon.

The best chance for more robust showers, or even a few rumbles of thunder, will be across the southeastern half of the region. Namely, areas south and east of a line from approximately Wellsville to Penn Yan to just south of Syracuse will have the best chance for rain.

Temperatures in these areas will mainly be in the low 70s this afternoon. Further north and west, where showers will be less likely and some breaks of sun may work through the clouds, highs will be in the mid 70s.

Shower activity should be quite limited overnight, but areas of dense fog will be possible. Overnight temperatures will be in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Wednesday will have some sun poking through the clouds, which may help trigger a few scattered afternoon showers. Highs will reach the mid 70s.

Low pressure moving along the front will push in Wednesday night into early Thursday with another area of widespread, locally heavy rain. Rainfall amounts will generally be on the order of a half inch, but with locally higher amounts thanks to some embedded downpours.

Winds will be light today and tomorrow with speeds generally under 5 mph. The wind will start to pick up Wednesday evening, with speeds increasing to 10-15 mph overnight. These winds will be from the southeast.

The wind will be gusty on Thursday as they turn to the south and southwest. Peak winds will likely be during the midday hours, when speeds may go over 15 mph. Top gusts will be in the 30-35 mph range.

Temperatures on Thursday will start out around 60 degrees with highs in the low and mid 70s. Morning rain will taper to a few showers with some afternoon sunshine possible.

Drying Out Again

Our last chance for rain this week will come on Friday, when, like Wednesday, just a few pop up showers are expected here and there. These should be quite hit-or-miss with light rainfall amounts.

Winds will be from the northwest on Friday with speeds around 10 mph. Temperatures will start in the upper 50s and top out in the low 70s.

Saturday is looking dry with a mix of sun and clouds. The morning will be a bit cooler, with lows in the low 50s and a few outlying areas in the upper 40s. Afternoon highs will rise to the mid 70s.

Saturday’s winds will be from the southwest with speeds of 5-10 mph, peaking during the midday and early afternoon.

A sunny day is expected on Sunday with few clouds and plenty of blue sky. Winds will be light from the west and northwest with speeds around 5 mph. Temperatures will be similar to Saturday, starting in the low 50s and ending up in the mid 70s.

Rain chances look quite low next week, with little showing on the models outside of some outlier paths of tropical systems that should remain out over the Atlantic Ocean.

Temperatures will remain mild, running slightly above the climatological averages. This will mean highs mainly in the upper 60s to mid 70s, but no extreme warmth.
