Rain and Wind
A large weather system will continue to impact our weather today with strong winds and late day rain.
The primary low pressure has redeveloped over New England and will rapidly intensify today as it slowly tracks northward into eastern Canada.
At first, the primary impact we will see from this today will be increasing winds.
Coming in from the west-northwest, wind speeds will build to 20-25 mph by the late morning and will maintain those speeds into the early evening. Wind gusts will mainly be between 40-45 mph, though a few locally higher gusts could approach 50 mph.
The wind will be accompanied by stray showers this morning and for the first half of the afternoon. These will transition to a more widespread, steadier rainfall for the late afternoon and evening.
The rain will be heaviest and longest lasting the further north and east you are. In fact, portions of the Southern Tier may not get into the steady rain at all.
As the sun sets, some wet snowflakes may mix in over the higher elevations between Cortland and Syracuse.
Afternoon highs will mainly be in the mid and upper 40s, with temperatures falling back toward the 30s for trick-or-treating this evening. Unfortunately, for many, the evening festivities look cold, wet, and windy.
The steadier precipitation will pull out during the latter half of the evening, leaving some stray lake effect showers southeast of Lake Ontario for the overnight. Lows will end up mainly between 35-40 degrees with wind speeds dropping for a time.
The wind will pick back up on Saturday but will not be as strong as today. Top gusts should be around 35 mph with decreasing winds in the afternoon.
Scattered showers will continue off of the Great Lakes, especially in the favored lake effect areas southeast of Lake Ontario.
Individual showers should be short lived but may be briefly heavy. Some graupel may even mix in as well. These will continue off and on throughout the day to varying degrees.
Afternoon highs will be a degree or two warmer than today, but most areas will still be stuck in the 40s.

Active Weather Pattern
An active weather pattern is setting up next week with several weather systems expected. However, many of these will be quick moving and not overly strong.
Sunday should be a dry day as winds turn to the southwest, removing any lake effect out of the area.
With a mix of sun and clouds, afternoon highs should break back into the low 50s.
South and southwest winds will become even better established on Monday with a few gusts approaching 30 mph.
The wind will push temperatures into the upper 50s with scattered showers, particularly later in the day.
Winds will turn back to the northwest as that weather system tracks east with gusts to 40 mph Tuesday morning. A few lingering showers will be possible but with a mainly dry afternoon expected.
Tuesday’s highs will take a slight dip to the low 50s.
The next system will approach on Wednesday, turning winds back to the south again. Rain will be most likely late in the day, and it may even hold off until after sunset. Highs should at least be in the mid 50s.
Cool air will push right back in on Thursday as low pressure to our east strengthens. Like today, it will likely turn out to be a rather windy day with at least scattered rain showers. Some models hint at some snow mixing in Thursday night, but it is too early to tell for sure.
Yet another weather system will be possible toward the weekend, though a more western track is expected, which could lead to another brief boost in temperature.
