Snow, wind, and cold make for a wintry Veteran’s Day

Wintry Weather

The weather will continue to look and feel more like winter today as areas of snow continue, coupled with increasing cold winds.

Areas of snow are scattered about the Finger Lakes this morning, but especially focused south and southeast of Lake Ontario.

Snow will continue to be common throughout the morning and midday hours. During the afternoon, there will be an overall reduction in snowfall, with mostly just stray flurries lingering.

Even though it is cloudy and cool, additional accumulations during the daytime hours will be minimal, with most areas seeing no more than an inch.

Northwest winds will increase through the morning, peaking with gusts as high as 40 mph from midday through the mid-afternoon.

Most areas will see a high in the mid 30s, but some valleys of the Southern Tier will likely reach the upper 30s while some higher elevations stay in the low 30s. However, with the wind, it will feel more like the 20s throughout the day.

Lighter winds will take over by the evening as the wind direction turns to the southwest. These winds will hold temperatures around 30 degrees for most of the night.

Some scattered areas of snow will likely develop this evening with little to no additional accumulation.

Snow will become more widespread during the predawn and early morning hours of Wednesday before turning over to rain showers later Wednesday morning and into the afternoon.

Southwest winds will remain in place through Wednesday with top gusts around 25 mph. Afternoon highs will be in the low 40s.

Cool and Unsettled

Temperatures on Thursday will start mainly in the mid 30s with a high in the mid 40s.

Precipitation will be limited to some sporadic lake effect southeast of Lake Ontario as winds gradually turn back to the northwest. Most, if not all, of this should fall as rain.

The wind will pick up again, particularly in the afternoon, with gusts to 35 mph.

Precipitation will remain southeast of Lake Ontario Thursday night, then will shift a bit more due south of the lake as winds become more northerly on Friday. Rain showers will be most likely until starting to turn to some snow in the afternoon for the moderate and higher elevations east of and around Cayuga Lake.

Temperatures Friday will start in the low and mid 30s with a high in the low 40s and upper 30s. Winds will gust to 30 mph at times during the afternoon.

Saturday looks like a mainly quiet, but mainly cloudy day. Temperatures will start down in the 20s thanks to some breaks in the clouds overnight. Afternoon highs will be in the low 40s.

Temperatures will get a boost on Sunday as low pressure passes to our west, then north. Highs should make it into the low 50s at least. Periods of rain will be likely, and winds may be a bit blustery at times, especially behind a cold front later in the day.

Rain showers will mix with snow showers Sunday night into Monday. Strong winds are possible on Monday, coming in from the northwest with gusts over 40 mph possible.

Temperatures look like they will stay cool most of next week, but there are some signs of slightly milder weather thereafter with highs in the 45-55 degree range the most likely.
