There will be a chance for strong thunderstorms in parts of the Finger Lakes late Wednesday and again on Thursday. Quieter but still warm weather will kick off the weekend, but a front Saturday night will cause temperatures to come crashing down for Sunday and Monday.
Wednesday
What: Showers and storms late
There will be two main periods of rain and thunder today. The first is moving through the Finger Lakes already early this morning as leftovers from yesterday’s storms across the Midwest. After this passes through, it should remain mostly dry until our second chance late this afternoon and early this evening. During that lull, skies will be mostly cloudy but with some occasional breaks of sun. Southerly flow will be lighter than that past couple of days, but temperatures should still make it well into the 70s. A few parts of the Southern Tier may reach 80 degrees. The rain and thunder chances increase again late this afternoon and early this evening. The set up will bear watching throughout the day with several different plausible scenarios. While most of the region may end up seeing some rain, the best chance for a few stronger thunderstorms will be across the southern half of the region. Keep an eye on the radar and this post/the FLX Weather homepage for updates late today, including the automated posting of any warnings that are issued.
Thursday
What: Showers and storms possible
Thursday will have a better defined trigger for thunderstorms in the form of a cold front that will arrive during the afternoon hours. While not as favorable a set up as the March 31 severe thunderstorm event a couple weeks ago, the set up is more favorable than yesterday or today. One uncertainty is whether there will be morning rain showers and how that may impact the fuel available for thunderstorms to develop and strengthen. The severe threat tomorrow will be further addressed in tonight’s Weather Planner post for Thursday and in tomorrow morning’s outlook.
Friday
What: A few early showers.
Quieter and cooler weather is expected on Friday in the wake of Thursday’s cold front. A few morning showers will be possible, but the afternoon should be dry with some sun. Highs will be around or just over 60 degrees with nighttime temperatures falling to around 50 degrees. Winds will be from the northwest, but not strong.
Saturday
What: Some sun, increasing clouds. Nighttime rain.
Southerly winds will return on Saturday, boosting temperatures back up into the 70s. The chance for a late rain shower will need to be monitored, but the majority of the day will be dry. The winds may be a bit blustery at times. During the night, the cold front will pass through with a period of rain. It is unclear how far it will drop overnight, but it will likely be cool by Sunday morning.
Sunday
What: A few showers. Breezy.
Blustery northwest winds will persist throughout Sunday. Temperatures will either fall a bit more, or mainly hold steady in the 40s. Scattered rain showers will be possible, especially early. A few snowflakes could mix in as well.
Monday
What: Early flurries.
Monday will start out with some scattered snow showers and temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s. A light coating may stick in some areas, but will be gone by the late morning. Precipitation will be less likely in the afternoon and some sun may come out. Highs will be in the upper 30s and low 40s with steady, but not too strong winds.
Tuesday & Beyond
Temperatures will rebound to the 50s on Tuesday with sunny skies. If the clouds from Monday clear out quick enough overnight, temperatures could end up in the 20s to start the day. The rest of the week’s temperatures will remain in the 50s with 30s and 40s overnight. Precipitation is too uncertain at this time, but chances seem mostly focused on the latter part of the week.
