Snow Pulls Out of the FLX

The first major storm of the winter is winding down across the Finger Lakes Friday morning after dumping plenty of snow across the region.

The storm continues to be right on schedule and is departing the area on time. Most of the region has already seen the snow stop at 6 am with the last bands leaving the I-81 corridor currently.

Friday morning’s surface map shows the noreaster lifting along the coast while a secondary low moves across the Great Lakes. This second low will bring a little more light snow this afternoon. Note: Precipitation is NOT color coded by type in this image. Click the map to enlarge.

Scattered snow showers and a little rain will be possible throughout the morning. During the early and mid afternoon, an area of light snow will clip the region on the backside of the storm.

Areas near Lake Ontario could see several hours of steady light snow while areas further south see on and off snow showers. Another inch or so may fall where the snow is steadiest.

Conditions will quiet down again this evening.

A west-southwest wind will pick up this afternoon with gusts between 20-30 mph. Some drifting of the snow could keep rural roads a bit sloppy as a result.

Otherwise, road conditions should improve this morning. Temperatures will rise into the mid and upper 30s by midday.

From the early reports coming in, most of the Finger Lakes seems to be settling into the 8-12 inch range. Many locations are over 10 inches, even to the north and west where I was not expecting the snow to be as heavy.

I hope to have a map of the snow reports later today.

Weekend Weather

Much of the weekend will have quiet weather across the Finger Lakes.

Saturday will be cloudy as the storm system responsible for our snow meanders over eastern Canada.

Areas of lake effect snow will develop to the east of the Great Lakes but should mostly stay out of the Finger Lakes during the day.

High temperatures Saturday afternoon will reach into the upper 30s with a few areas hitting 40 degrees.

Late in the day the wind will turn from the west to the northwest as a small cold front moves through. This front will pick up the lake effect and bring it south for a quick burst during the evening.

Temperatures Sunday morning will end up in the 20s for most places. Skies will remain rather cloudy though a few breaks of sun will try to work out early in the day.

Afternoon highs will settle in the low 30s for many.

Some more light snow is expected during the evening hours Sunday with an inch or two of accumulation.

Quiet for the Holiday Week

Monday and Tuesday may have a few snow showers scattered about the area. No significant accumulations are to be expected though.

Temperatures will bounce to the upper 30s on Monday and then back to the low 30s on Tuesday.

A morning snow shower will also be possible on Wednesday before some sun tries to come out late in the day. Wednesday will reach the mid 30s for highs.

Thanksgiving itself on Thursday looks a bit nicer finally. Temperatures should push into the mid 40s, which is right on the seasonal average. No precipitation is expected, and the sun should shine.

Friday looks similarly pleasant if not a bit warmer.
