Next Winter Weather System

High pressure will move through the Finger Lakes today, keeping conditions quiet and skies sunny.

There are a few lingering lake effect clouds southeast of Lake Ontario and across portions of the western Finger Lakes this morning. A few stray flurries cannot be ruled out, but these will not amount to anything.

Mostly sunny skies are expected into the afternoon before thin clouds start to increase late. These clouds should continue to thicken this evening and overnight out ahead of the next weather maker.

Winds are out of the northwest this morning but will gradually diminish today. The wind has brought in cooler air and temperatures will top out in the low and mid 20s, even with the sunshine. Overnight temperatures will mostly be in the low teens with a few pockets slipping under ten degrees.

The next weather system will track well to our south and east, keeping our area out of the core of heavier snow. There is some question as to how far north the snow will make it, and when it will first arrive in the Finger Lakes.

In the most-snowy scenarios, light to occasionally moderate snow will spread north into the Finger Lakes Thursday afternoon and continue into the evening. This would bring a widespread 3-6 inches by Friday afternoon. I remain skeptical of this scenario.

More likely, there will end up being a gradient in snow amounts, with most areas in the 1-3 inch range with a stripe of 3-6 in the southeast. In these scenarios, most of the snow would come Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Either way, this snow should have only minor to slight travel impacts given the lighter intensities and lower amounts over a fairly long duration.

Since it is a lower impact event and there is still a fair amount of uncertainty in the finer details, I’ve decided to hold off on a snow map for now. The bottom line is to expect some snow later Thursday and early Friday, but not anything that should have a significant impact outside of slight travel delays.

Temperatures on Thursday will rise into the mid and upper 20s, while Friday gets into the low 30s as snow showers continue.

Warmer Weather Ahead

Northwest winds behind this weather system will push temperatures back into the mid and upper 20s for Saturday. Lake effect snow showers are expected to continue the snow through Friday night and into Saturday.

Within the steadier northwest to southeast bands, several more inches of snow may fall. As usual though, outside of the bands, little to no accumulation will be expected.

By Sunday, high pressure will build in. Winds will turn to the west, removing the lake effect, and then to the south, ending it completely.

With plenty of sunshine, temperatures should make it into the low 30s for most areas. A few mid 30s shouldn’t be ruled out, either. Some clouds will increase late in the day and into the nighttime hours.

Early Monday, a warm front will move through with a band of snow. A quick inch or two may fall, followed by afternoon temperatures in the upper 30s.

South winds ahead of another system should push temperatures into the 40s on Tuesday with a few late day or evening rain and snow showers.

Wednesday currently looks sunny and pleasant with highs in the upper 30s.

Our weather pattern will remain active late next week and beyond, but the pattern favors a storm track through the Great Lakes and into eastern Canada. This should keep our temperatures mostly in the 30s and occasionally warmer through the final days of February and into early March.
