Cold Fronts

A cold front moved into the Finger Lakes last night and is currently stalled out over the southeastern corner of the region.

There are several waves of unsettled weather along the front. One moved through last night with some severe thunderstorms for the far western Finger Lakes. A second is lifting north through the Appalachians with an area of rain extending from southwestern Pennsylvania to Kentucky and Tennessee.

This area of rain should mostly slide south and east of the region later today, but areas from Elmira to Ithaca to Cortland could see some showers from the late morning into the midafternoon.

Otherwise, only stray showers are expected across the region as the front slowly creeps eastward. Skies will remain cloudy throughout the day.

Winds will be light today, coming in mostly from the northwest with speeds under 10 mph. The clouds and winds will not give temperatures much opportunity to rise, with highs ranging through the 50s, only a few degrees warmer than it is early this morning.

Precipitation will become more likely tonight as a secondary push of colder air moves in. Most of this will probably be rain early on, but snow will take over as the primary precipitation type overnight. The snow will be on and off, with individual snow showers only lasting a brief time. Some short-lived bursts will be possible, continuing into Wednesday morning.

Snow accumulations will be limited to a light coating on some grassy and elevated surfaces. Most of this should melt between snow showers once the sun is up tomorrow.

Snow showers will be more plentiful during the morning, but a few flurries may linger into the afternoon hours. High temperatures Wednesday will range from the upper 30s and low 40s in some higher elevations to the mid 40s for most other areas.

Wednesday will be breezy with northwest winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

Sunny, Dry Stretch

A large area of high pressure centered north of the Great Lakes will build in Wednesday night. Skies will start to clear, a process that should be completed by Thursday morning.

Thursday will start off chilly with lows ranging from the mid 20s in the western Southern Tier to the low 30s along lakeshores. Most areas will start the day below freezing.

Skies will be sunny from start to finish, but temperatures will remain well below average. Highs will be within a degree or two on either side of 45 degrees. It will remain windy, especially east of Seneca Lake, where northwest gusts to 35 mph will be commonplace once again. To the west, gusts will top out near 30 mph.

Temperatures Thursday night will be similar to Wednesday night, with mid 20s to low 30s by dawn Friday. The daytime, too, will have many similarities to Thursday.

Northwest winds will continue, with gusts of 30-35 mph east of Seneca Lake and 25-30 mph to the west. Skies will be sunny from start to finish.

Temperatures will moderate slightly, with highs getting to around 50 degrees. Friday night will also be a couple degrees warmer, with most areas above 30.

Dry and sunny weather will persist into the weekend, with temperatures continuing to moderate. Both Saturday and Sunday are also expected to have abundant sunshine and few, if any, clouds. Saturday will have highs solidly into the low and mid 50s, while Sunday may approach 60 degrees.

By Monday, it may be warm again, with highs possibly pushing towards the 70s. As of now, precipitation is still not expected, though some clouds may work in later Monday.

Rain will become more likely toward the middle of next week, but it remains too uncertain to pinpoint details at this time. Temperatures trends, too, are uncertain beyond early next week.
