Blustery Snow Showers
Cold air is settling into the Finger Lakes this morning after a series of early-week cold fronts have moved through.
Scattered snow showers dot the region this morning and will continue off and on today. From the late morning onward, there should be an overall reduction in the number of snow showers, but a few flurries lingering as late as the early evening cannot be ruled out.
There should be little to no snow accumulation from these snow showers. A brief dusting of snow may occur in any brief, heavier bursts, but it will likely melt as quickly as it accumulates.
In addition to the flurries, northwest winds will be blustery today. Wind speeds will be 10-15 mph with top gusts around 35 mph. Sunshine today will be limited to a few brief glimpses between snow showers.
The wind and persistent cloud cover will result in well below average temperatures today. Many areas will top out near or just above 40 degrees during the midday or early afternoon hours. By the late afternoon, 30s will be widespread across the area.
Skies will start to clear after midnight, with temperatures dropping to anywhere from the mid 20s in the western Southern Tier to the mid 30s near the shore of Lake Ontario. Most areas will be in the upper 20s and low 30s overnight.
Winds will remain blustery on Thursday, still coming in from the northwest. Top gusts from about Seneca Lake eastward will be around 35 mph again. To the west, gusts will top out closer to 30 mph.
One major difference between today and tomorrow will be the sunshine. Skies should be clear by sunrise and will remain sun-filled throughout the day. The sun will help temperatures warm a little with highs mostly in the mid 40s.
Staying Sunny
Thursday night will again be on the chilly side with most areas near or below freezing. Upper 20s will be a bit more widespread than on Wednesday night, with mainly near-lake areas staying in the low 30s.
Friday will be another sunny day from start to finish. Northwest winds will persist but will again be a little slower than the day before. Most areas should see gusts under 30 mph. Areas along and east of an Elmira to Ithaca to Cortland to Tully line will still see some gusts over 30 mph.
The temperature on Friday will nudge upward more with highs averaging around 50 degrees. While about ten degrees warmer than today, this is still about ten additional degrees below the average highs for late April, which are around 60 degrees.
Below average temperatures will persist into Saturday, with highs only gaining a couple more degrees to the low 50s. Morning lows will still start out near or below freezing, but fewer areas should dip into the 20s.
Saturday will be one final fully sunny day. North and northwest winds will continue to blow, but gusts will drop to the 20-25 mph range.
By Sunday, some thin clouds will begin to work into the area. The sun should still shine through these fairly easily. Light winds will finally swing around to a more southerly direction, allowing temperatures to jump to the mid 60s.
The weather becomes uncertain as we head into the first days of May. There will be chances for showers and possibly thunderstorms later Monday into Tuesday. The timing of this rain is highly uncertain still, though.
Also uncertain are the temperatures behind the early week weather system. The models show a large spread in possibilities, with everything from 40s to 70s possible.
