Mid-Week Weather
High pressure will continue to be a large influence on the weather for the next several days.
There will be some influence from nearby weather systems in the form of cloud cover. However, rain is not expected to reach the Finger Lakes until Thursday night or Friday.
A stretch of mainly clear skies has settled into the Finger Lakes this morning with clouds not far to the south, east, or northwest. Several hours of sunshine are likely this morning before fair-weather clouds bubble up and some outside thin clouds move back in.
The afternoon will continue to see increasing clouds, though it may not turn completely overcast like yesterday. A brief, stray shower cannot be totally ruled out, but over 95 percent of the area will remain dry.
Light east winds this morning will swing around to the south but will be overtaken by a northerly lake breeze for areas near and north of I-90. Wind speeds will be near or under 5 mph for most of the day. Slightly stronger winds near Lake Ontario will be possible.
The sunshine this morning will help temperatures warm quickly from a chilly start. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the low 70s. Along the shore of Lake Ontario, the lake breeze will hold temperatures to the 60s.
Temperatures will not be as chilly tonight with overnight lows around 50 degrees. Skies will be rather cloudy to start Wednesday with a deck of thin overcast, similar to yesterday afternoon and evening. The overcast will stick around much of the day.
Nonetheless, temperatures will add a couple more degrees to the high, with mid 70s becoming more likely. Higher elevations and the Southern Tier will be a couple degrees cooler, but still near or above 70 degrees.
Thursday will be cloudier yet, but also warmer thanks to blustery south winds. Wind speeds will be up to 15 mph with gusts of 30-35 mph.
Temperatures will be warmest in and around Rochester, where low and even mid 80s will be possible. Most of the region should settle in the upper or mid 70s.
Showers, Then Even Warmer
A weather system will move into the area for Friday, possibly lingering into the weekend as well.
Widespread rain showers are expected on Friday with a few embedded rumbles of thunder. Wind profiles will be decent for severe storms, but there will be a significant lack of fuel for thunderstorms. The setup bears watching in case there is a break of sun to allow for warmer temperatures, but at this time, the severe weather threat is not a concern.
Temperatures on Friday will likely top out in the low 70s thanks to the clouds and showers. Saturday will have similar temperatures. Both mornings will start out in the low 60s.
A few showers and storms will be possible into Saturday as well, though there is some uncertainty with how quickly the weather system departs. There is no indication that severe thunderstorms will be of any concern.
The weather should dry out for Sunday, but again, there is some uncertainty about how quickly the weather system departs, so confidence is low at this point. Assuming it stays dry, temperatures should at least make it into the mid 70s.
Memorial Day on Monday should be warmer yet but will probably not be the hottest upcoming day. Highs in the 80s are likely, with shots at 90 Tuesday and or Wednesday next week. The heat will break sometime on Wednesday or Thursday with cooler weather to end the week.
