High Pressure Departs

A large area of unsettled weather to our west and southwest will be held at bay just a little longer by high pressure off the New England coast.

As the lower pressures associated with the unsettled weather butt up against the high, southerly winds will pick up today. Wind speeds will increase to 10-15 mph with gusts in the 30-35 mph range.

The southerly winds will help temperatures rise several degrees today. Most places will be near or just above 80 degrees. The Rochester area will be warmest with some mid 80s possible. A few higher elevations will stick to the mid 70s.

Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds, though clouds will be more plentiful than sunshine. It should remain dry through the day and into the evening, though.

Nighttime temperatures will gradually drop into the 60s this evening with mid 60s for overnight lows. A few showers after midnight will be possible.

The chances for rain will increase on Friday with on and off showers. It probably will not rain constantly throughout the day, but multiple waves of precipitation are possible with a couple of heavier periods. The rain Friday will be possible at any time throughout the day. There is no one period that seems to have a better chance for dry weather than another.

During the late afternoon and especially the evening hours, a few thunderstorms will be possible. While the chances for severe thunderstorms are very low, any thunderstorm that manages to develop could have some locally gusty winds. Most areas will not even hear any thunder, though.

With the clouds and showers, temperatures will take a step back. Look for highs in the mid 70s. South winds will continue to blow at around 10 mph with an occasional gust as high as 30 mph.

A front will move through Saturday morning, keeping rain in the forecast through the morning hours. The afternoon should turn dry with some sunshine working out as the front clears the area.

Winds will turn to the northwest, importing a brief shot of cooler air. Highs Saturday should mostly be in the upper 60s.

Turning Hot Again

A whisper of a south wind will develop by Sunday, though winds will mostly just be calm. Still, with plenty of sunshine and the loss of the northwest winds, temperatures will climb.

After morning lows in the upper 40s and low 50s, Sunday afternoon should top out in the upper 70s.

Memorial Day on Monday will tack on another ten degrees or so, with highs in the afternoon in the upper 80s. A few places hitting 90 degrees is not out of the question.

It will be a sunny day with just a few clouds. Southwest winds will blow at 5-10 mph.

Tuesday is the best chance to hit 90 degrees with mostly sunny skies and a warm start in the mid 60s. The heat is a bit less certain for Wednesday with highs possibly backing off to the mid 80s.

Clouds may increase on Wednesday ahead of an approaching cold front late next week. We will also have to watch for small impulses in the atmosphere and leftover thunderstorm complexes that initially form over the middle of the nation or southern Canada.

In short, the rain chances later next week are highly uncertain at this point and will have an impact on the temperatures. By the weekend, temperatures will return to near average levels around or slightly above 70 degrees.
