Cold Front Today
A cold front will press southeast across the region from Canada today, triggering scattered storms but also ushering in tranquil weather for the weekend.
Friday is starting off with a mix of sun, clouds, and wildfire smoke. There are a few isolated showers and rumbles of thunder, but most areas will remain dry through the morning hours.
The smoke will stick around through the morning as well, with Air Quality Indices mainly in the yellow “Moderate” range.
Temperatures will rise to around 80 degrees by the early afternoon as the cold front moves into the area. Scattered showers and storms will pop up between Noon-2 PM, mainly over the southeastern half of the region.
Thunderstorms will quickly develop and intensify, bringing a chance for some localized damaging winds or some small hail. The storms will move quickly off to the southeast and should exit the Finger Lakes by 4 or 5 PM.
Many areas will not see a storm today, let alone severe weather. The further southeast, the greater the chances for thunderstorms.
The late afternoon and evening hours look mainly quiet. A stray shower cannot be totally ruled out, but most areas should stay completely dry. There will be a slightly better chance for a stray shower well after midnight and early Saturday morning.
Southwest winds this morning will turn to the northwest for the late afternoon as the front moves through. These winds will bring in only slightly cooler air. Overnight lows in the upper 50s and low 60s are likely.
Sunshine will increase on Saturday, though lingering smoke will still be around to make skies hazy. Wind will be from the northwest still with speeds around 7 mph. Afternoon highs will make it into the upper 70s.
Watching Monday
By Sunday, our weather will already be reacting to the next approaching weather system.
Winds will turn to the southeast but will remain light on Sunday. A deck of thin clouds will filter the sunshine, as will lingering smoke.
It will be a dry day with slightly warmer temperatures. Look for highs in the low 80s after starting the morning in the 50s.
Monday continues to look stormy late in the day as another cold front moves through. Strong thunderstorms will be possible, though there are still uncertainties that need to be worked out. Stay tuned through the weekend for updates.
Temperatures will go from the low 80s on Monday to the upper 70s on Tuesday. Tuesday may have a lingering shower early, but sunshine should increase through the afternoon.
Wednesday should be mainly dry as well, with highs around 80. However, forecast confidence is lower by Wednesday.
The next system should roll in sometime late in the week. This could bring some thunderstorms as early as late Thursday or Thursday night.
Temperatures will continue to bounce around the upper half of the 70s and lower half of the 80s throughout next week and possibly beyond.
