Above Average Temperatures
High pressure over the Ohio River Valley continues to dominate our weather.
Today should be sunnier and warmer than yesterday as a southwesterly flow persists.
Skies are clear throughout the region this morning. Despite the clearing, most areas are already above the average high temperature for the day with widespread upper 30s and low 40s.
However, there are some cold pockets in the southeastern Finger Lakes, particularly where there is still a little snow cover. Cincinnatus, in Cortland County, is reporting 21 degrees at 7 AM.
Temperatures will rise steadily this morning, and many will end up near or above 50 degrees this afternoon. Higher elevations, particularly in and around Cortland County, will settle for upper or mid 40s.
Wind speeds will be near or under 10 mph, except for some slightly stronger winds near Rochester and the Genesee Valley. These will be southwest and west winds.
Tonight, skies will remain clear at first before clouds increase. Evening temperatures will slowly drop to the 30s, with overnight lows in the low 30s across the south with mid 30s to the north.
Skies will be cloudier on Saturday, though some glimpses of sunshine here and there are likely. Control of our weather will be passed from the Ohio Valley high pressure system to a new high moving across Canada.
This change will shave several degrees off the high, with Saturday topping out mostly in the mid 40s.
Winds will turn to the south-southeast Saturday night and increase to 10-15 mph. Clouds will also increase and thicken. Overnight lows will stick near 40 degrees as a result.
Southeast winds will remain on the blustery side into Sunday with thick cloud cover. Nonetheless, Sunday’s temperatures will be closer to today’s levels with highs around 50 degrees.

Rainy, then Quiet Again
A strong coastal low pressure system will race along the Eastern Seaboard Sunday into Monday, causing severe weather over Florida, coastal flooding along the Atlantic coast, and plenty of heavy rain up and down the eastern United States. A complete lack of cold air will prevent a major winter storm.
The first rain will arrive in the Finger Lakes late Sunday afternoon or early in the evening. Very little rain is expected before the sun sets.
Rain will increase Sunday evening with the heaviest falling after midnight and into Monday morning. Showers will continue on Monday, but the rain should be lighter and more sporadic as the afternoon goes on.
How much rain falls will depend on the exact path of the low pressure. The most likely scenario is for 1-2 inches to fall, but as much as 3 inches, or as little as a half-inch, remains possible.
Monday night into Tuesday, some cold air will be pulled down behind the low. Scattered snow showers and lake effect bands will develop with some localized minor accumulations. High temperatures on Tuesday will struggle to reach 30 degrees.
Northwest winds behind this storm will be blustery Monday and Tuesday but should not be overly strong.
Another stretch of quiet and sunny weather is likely to build in starting Wednesday and lasting the rest of the workweek next week.
There are some slight snow chances being hinted at on the models for Christmas time, leaving a small window open for a chance at a White Christmas.
