Turning Cooler

A cold front tonight will put an end to the much warmer than average temperature pattern we have been locked into all week.

This front will take shape today as a new area of low pressure strengthens over New England. The front will first develop just north of Lake Ontario, then will drop south during the nighttime hours.

Scattered showers continue to dot the region this morning. Locally dense fog also persists, but should gradually decrease through the morning.

The lowest chances for rain across the region as a whole looks to be during the early afternoon, though even then, it is unlikely that it will be completely dry. Showers will then become increasingly focused ahead of the front across the northeastern half of the region as the afternoon goes on. There will still be spits of rain further southwest, just fewer of them.

Temperatures will not move much today, rising from the upper 30s and low 40s this morning to the mid and upper 40s this afternoon.

Precipitation will increase this evening as the front drops south. Areas south of I-90, especially in higher terrain, will start to turn over to snow before midnight. Most other areas will turn over to snow by the predawn hours.

Widespread snow will continue into the first couple of hours after sunrise, decreasing from northwest to southeast and ending by mid-morning. Most areas will see no more than a light coating of accumulation, but some higher elevations may see an inch or so.

Saturday morning lows will be in the low and mid 30s with afternoon highs in the mid and upper 30s. A few flurries off Lake Ontario will be possible throughout the day with no additional accumulation.

Northwest winds on Saturday may briefly approach 10 mph but should not be any stronger.

Weather to Start 2024

Sunday is looking to be a quiet day for the close of 2023. Quiet, but cloudy.

While no precipitation is expected outside of a stray flurry early near Lake Ontario, sunshine will be equally difficult to come by.

Morning temperatures will start out around 30 degrees and afternoon highs will reach the upper 30s. Wind direction will be variable throughout the region with wind speeds will be under 5 mph.

New Year’s Eve Sunday night will see some light precipitation sneaking in from the west. By midnight, most areas should be seeing some light snow. This snow is not expected to cause any travel woes, with accumulations again limited to a light coating overnight.

A few snow showers may linger early on Monday. The rest of the day will be mostly cloudy, though there is a chance for a few breaks of sunshine during the afternoon.

Monday’s temperatures will start off in the upper 20s and rise to the mid 30s.

Tuesday and Wednesday both look dry. Tuesday should have a decent amount of sunshine, mixing at times with some mainly thin clouds. Wednesday, however, will probably turn out mostly cloudy.

Morning lows on Tuesday will be in the mid 20s, while Wednesday morning will start out near 30 degrees. Afternoon highs for both days will be around 40 degrees.

Unsettled weather looks possible for the end of next week as a couple of quick moving systems pass through. Beyond the weekend, the spread of possibilities showing on the weather models is too broad to confidently identify any trends.

This is likely to be my final post for 2023. I will probably have some sort of a post on Monday, but not at the usual 8 AM time. Tuesday, January 2nd, I will return to my normal posting schedule. As always, the zip-code forecasts on the website and app will be continually updated. Have a safe and happy New Year’s!
