Shot of Cold
Low pressure passing by to our south brought rain to the area yesterday and overnight.
Precipitation associated with this low is now to our east. Meanwhile, a second low tracking across the Upper Great Lakes is approaching.
A stream of mild air between these two lows will move into the Finger Lakes today. Linger clouds and morning fog are already breaking up in some parts of the region, and this trend will continue through the morning.
By midday, most areas will be sunny, and temperatures will be rising steadily. Sunny skies will persist for much of the afternoon.
Projected high temperatures have been rising for today and it now looks like many areas will be near or slightly above 50 degrees. A few pockets may make a run at the mid 50s even. Higher elevations will stick to the mid 40s, while mid-range elevations will be in the upper 40s.
Clouds will increase late and a few stray showers will be possible before sunset. Winds will turn to the northwest as a cold front moves through and rain showers will turn to flurries during the evening.
A brief period of lake effect snow will develop overnight, bringing a light coating of snow to many areas.
By Saturday morning, temperatures will have fallen nearly 40 degrees for a morning low in the 10s. Afternoon highs will only make it to the low and mid 20s, a drop of about 30 degrees from today.
Steady north winds on Saturday with speeds around 10 mph will keep wind chill values in the single digits and low 10s.
Like today, lingering morning clouds will quickly dissipate tomorrow, and most of the day should be mostly sunny.
More Warm Weather
Winds will turn around to the southwest by Saturday evening. Temperatures will fall back into the mid 10s but will probably not fall any further expect in some sheltered cold pockets.
Sunday will start out chilly but sunny. Sunshine will mix with clouds before skies turn mostly cloudy during the afternoon.
South and southwest winds near 10 mph will push warm air back into the region with highs reaching the low and mid 40s.
A few showers or flurries will move through Sunday night with little fanfare. By Monday morning, skies should be turning sunny once again.
Behind the small system responsible for those spits of precipitation, winds will be light and from the west and northwest on Monday. However, there will be no influx of cold air, with morning lows in the low 30s and afternoon highs in the mid 40s.
The temperature will get a further boost on Tuesday and Wednesday as southerly flow increases out ahead of a larger weather systems over the middle of the nation.
Tuesday should push into the mid 50s with morning sun and a few late day showers. Clouds, wind, and rain chances will increase Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Overnight lows Tuesday night look to only be in the mid 40s while Wednesday should reach the upper 50s. Depending on how the rain sets up on Wednesday, it could get even warmer.
Temperatures will take a brief hit late next week behind this system but should still manage to stay near or above 40 degrees. Another push of warm air will begin to move in next weekend, peaking early the following week with highs at least into the 50s.
Longer range modeling continues to favor warmer weather through mid-March, but then hints at cooler weather for the second half of the month.
