Weather Through Sunday
A few thin clouds are moving into the Finger Lakes this Friday morning out ahead of a weekend weather maker.
The clouds will remain thin this morning but will gradually thicken through the afternoon. No rain will fall today or tonight, even as clouds continue to increase overnight.
South and southeast winds will be light during the daytime hours. The wind will team up with the filtered sunshine to push temperatures warmer than yesterday.
Most areas will top out in the mid 50s. Some of the typically warmer areas, such as Syracuse, Rochester, the Genesee Valley, and the broad river valleys of the Southern Tier, will push into the upper 50s or even near 60 degrees.
Tonight, wind speeds will increase to 10-15 mph. Higher elevations will gust over 30 mph after midnight.
Much of Saturday morning will be dry, though a few stray showers will start to pass through. The chances for rain will increase into the afternoon, with a widespread steady rainfall developing during the second half of the afternoon.
Temperatures on Saturday will generally top out in the mid 40s.
Widespread rain, with a few embedded downpours, will continue through the night, ending as a little wet snow during the hours leading up to sunrise Sunday. Some areas may see over an inch of rainfall by Sunday morning.
Winds will become calm for a brief time Saturday night as the low pressure passes overhead. They will pick back up from the west-northwest during the predawn hours. These will increase further Sunday morning, reaching speeds of 15-20 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph.
Moisture wrapping around the low will combine with the Great Lakes to produce a spray of snow showers that will continue throughout Sunday, especially for areas north and east of a Rochester-Penn Yan-Ithaca line.
The snow and wind will reduce visibility, but for the daytime hours, most roads should be just wet and accumulations will be minimal on grassy surfaces. Temperatures will hover in the mid 30s.
Monday Morning’s Snow and Next Week’s Weather
Lake effect will continue and possibly even intensify Sunday night as temperatures drop below freezing after sunset.
Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, and northern Cortland counties in particular could see moderate accumulations Sunday night into early Monday. Localized amounts approaching a foot are possible, but still quite uncertain.
The snow will continue Monday morning but should gradually diminish and end during the afternoon hours. A little late sun may be able to boost temperatures up to the upper 30s.
Monday will be slightly windier than Sunday. Northwest winds will have speeds up to 20 mph and gusts to 45 mph. The strongest winds will be in the morning.
The combination of wind and snow may make travel Monday morning difficult in some areas.
Tuesday will be much quieter, with sunshine and highs bouncing back to near 50 degrees.
High temperatures will approach or exceed 60 degrees at least Wednesday and Thursday next week. Both days should have a little sun, but a few late showers may also pass through on Wednesday.
The weather is less certain by Friday as a strong frontal boundary sets up somewhere nearby. Along the front, rain will be possible. Just south, sunshine will boost temperatures well into the 60s with a shot even at 70 degrees.
This front will likely move southeast through the region by Saturday, increasing the chances for rain and decreasing temperatures. In fact, generally cooler weather is expected for the following week.
