Estimated snow accumulations Sunday night into Monday morning, March 10-11, 2024. Snow amounts will be highly variable due to both lake effect and elevation influences.

Sunday Night Snow Forecast

Cold air and moisture wrapping around the backside of low pressure passing through Saturday will lead to wintry conditions and poor travel Sunday night and early Monday.

After a rainy Saturday afternoon and night, the weather will temporarily settle Sunday morning as precipitation becomes spotty and less intense.

Temperatures will be dropping Sunday morning, with most areas seeing a switch over from rain showers to snow showers early on. Blustery northwest winds will also develop. Little to no travel impacts are expected in the morning.

Through the first part of the afternoon, there will be an uptick in snow showers. A brief squall cannot be ruled out, either, which may coat the grass white and reduce visibility on the roads.

The weather will deteriorate through the latter half of the afternoon, though to varying degrees based on location. The worst weather will come as sunset approaches and throughout the nighttime hours. The snow should end by mid-morning on Monday.

Highly variable conditions are expected, with both lake effect and elevation having major roles.

As such, southern Cayuga, southern Onondaga, northern Cortland, and portions of eastern Tompkins County will likely see the highest snow totals and the most difficult travel conditions. Localized snow amounts in excess of 6 inches will be possible in these areas.

Other higher elevations will also see more snow than nearby lower elevations. These include the hills to the west of Ithaca, to the west of Penn Yan, and especially into the Bristol Hills. Off Lake Erie, Wyoming County will also see heavier snowfall.

As temperatures drop into the 20s after sunset, road conditions will rapidly deteriorate, especially where it is snowing heavily. Wind gusts of 30-40 mph in open areas will create very low visibility and keep roadways messy, even when plowed.

The worst travel conditions will be after sunset. However, road conditions will start to deteriorate even before sunset in the areas of heavier snow and colder temperatures outlined above. Also, Monday morning’s commute will be impacted, though conditions will be gradually improving by then.

Sunny skies should take over Monday afternoon and temperatures will warm to 35-40 degrees.

Winds will be strongest Monday morning with widespread gusts to 45 mph and a few gusts to 50 mph possible. The wind will only gradually lessen Monday afternoon.
